hiiii could i possibly request something with the good ol' "steve is insecure with his place in the group/his intelligence/his worth compared to the rest of the party" cliche with reassurances in the form of copious amounts of cuddles and kisses and pet names from eddie? you're so great for doing these and i'm eagerly waiting for the next chapter of call me sunshine <3
Not Steve "self-doubt" Harrington convincing himself he can't be loved because he doesn't fit in or provide "useful" things to the group!!! I am lowkey hoping someone maybe adds to make this explicit because something about them having to be quiet in a tent just sounds like it has potential idk. Eddie is so in love in this it makes me SICK. - Mickala ❤️ (@scoops-stevie)
----------------------------------------------------
When Steve suggested that they do something fun together for the weekend, he meant maybe going into the city or renting a lake house maybe.
He definitely didn’t mean camping.
Outdoor camping was Dustin’s idea, and all the kids had agreed quickly. Robin bowed out the moment she could come up with a decent excuse and he could tell that Eddie wanted to do the same but wouldn’t abandon him.
Hopefully.
Eddie had quietly offered to steal another RV, but Steve turned it down.
“You just started getting back in the good graces of most of the town, let’s not give them a reason to hate you again.”
So they packed up the van with all the camping supplies they collectively had: three tents (one for the girls, one for the boys, one for Steve and Eddie), a couple coolers full of drinks and food, a few chairs, flashlights, sleeping bags, and clothes.
Steve wasn’t great at reading maps, so he let Dustin ride passenger to help Eddie find where they were going.
He sat with the girls, mostly because he liked the way they just ignored everyone and everything and talked amongst each other about mundane things.
He may not always understand what they’re talking about, but he liked being a part of it.
He almost never understood what they were talking about actually.
But it was better than having everything the boys were talking about go right over his head.
Especially when they started arguing about stuff and talked so fast that Steve had no chance of keeping up.
Steve just kind of watched as everyone around him had conversations.
He tried not to think about how everyone was existing without him in a way.
He was here, but he wasn’t needed.
—-----------------------
When they arrived at the campsite, it was even more secluded than they thought it would be.
It was also only a couple hours until sunset and they all had to make sure the tents were set up properly before it was too dark to see.
Steve got started with his tent while Eddie helped the girls. Max still had limited movement in her wrists so she was given the task of setting the chairs around the fire pit that Lucas and Mike had formed.
Steve was struggling.
He’d only put up one tent before, and it was at summer camp where the counselor and four other boys had been helping. In all honesty, he’d pretty much managed to watch the whole time instead of help.
He would manage to get part of it up, but it would fall apart when he tried to do the other side. He kept losing the pieces to keep it tied down to the ground.
He was losing against an inanimate object.
Everyone else was doing fine; Joking and laughing and finishing up their tasks like they didn’t have to put all their focus into one thing at a time.
El wordlessly started helping him, and he knew she wasn’t judging him, but he couldn’t help the small part of his brain that was telling him that she thought he was stupid.
He was quiet for the rest of the evening.
They cooked hot dogs over the fire that Will started, then made s’mores since El had never had them before.
He watched and listened, smiled when everyone else was.
But he felt overcome with sadness that he just didn’t belong here.
He was the babysitter, he took care of them, and drove them around, and helped them survive alternate dimension monsters.
He didn’t know how to talk to them about the stuff they liked, or play their stupid dragon game. He could barely keep up with half the things they said.
“Hey guys, I’m gonna turn in for the night,” he said suddenly, interrupting something Mike had been saying to everyone.
Everyone looked at him with sad looks, but Eddie looked concerned.
“You okay? Is it a headache?” He asked.
Damn, he hadn’t even thought of a good excuse. At least Eddie was providing him one for free.
“Yeah, just a little one. I think if I sleep now it’ll be fine by morning.”
The taste of the lie in his mouth made his lip curl slightly. The words “friends don’t lie” replayed in his brain as he stood up and made his way to his tent at the far end of their setup.
No one tried to stop him, but he could feel their eyes on him as he unzipped his tent and then zipped it back up behind him.
They’d set up lamps inside each tent so that they could reserve flashlights for bathroom trips or emergencies. His was the kind you can dim, so he did. He took off his shoes and jeans, changing into the t-shirt he brought from home that was probably Eddie’s now that he was looking closer at it.
He’d brought his pillow from home because he couldn’t possibly sleep flat on the ground, and Eddie had brought one of his own because he still had some back pains when he slept wrong.
He curled up in his sleeping bag, holding Eddie’s pillow against his chest.
He felt a tear start to run down his face without his permission, not even sure why he was crying right now.
He heard the zipper and tried to shut his eyes quickly, hide his face in the pillow in hopes that Eddie would think he was really asleep.
“Hey darlin’. Mind if I join?” Eddie whispered.
Steve couldn’t ignore him, so he nodded and started to move the pillow from his chest and face.
“Oh, sweetheart. Why are you crying?”
Steve shook his head. He couldn’t even begin to explain.
“Can I hold you?”
Steve let out a sob, and Eddie didn’t wait for him to answer.
He was laying down next to Steve, pulling him against his chest and running his hands up and down his back.
“Is it a migraine? Do you need me to get some ice from the cooler? Or medicine from the van?”
“No, not a migraine.”
“Okay. Is it just a bad night?”
Steve couldn’t help the fondness he felt at that.
Eddie was so understanding, and incredible, and perfect. Steve didn’t deserve him just like he didn’t deserve the rest of these people.
Stevie, it’s okay to have a bad night. Sometimes they just happen, right? That’s what you always tell me.”
Eddie’s hand had found its way to Steve’s hair, slowly running through the strands, occasionally looping the ends around a finger.
It sent chills down Steve’s spine when his fingers brushed against his neck so gently.
“I just don’t belong here.”
“I’ll admit the outdoors is not really my favorite place either, but-”
“No, not. Not the outdoors. Here. With everyone.”
“Why wouldn’t you?” Eddie’s hand had frozen in his hair and on his back.
“I’m not smart. I’m not good at putting things together or fixing things. I can’t even be in most of their conversations. They keep me around because they don’t know how to get rid of me. I mean, they don’t even need a babysitter anymore!”
Steve’s tears were dripping onto Eddie’s shirt, making a mess.
Another reason he shouldn’t be around.
Eddie tilted his face up, nothing but love in his eyes.
“I want you to listen to me. You are needed in this group. You are wanted in this group. You are loved in this group. Do you really think a bunch of teenagers would be wasting a weekend camping with you when they could be going to the movies or the arcade or getting into trouble?”
Steve didn’t answer, but he sniffled as he watched Eddie get more passionate.
“And it is absolute bullshit that you’re not smart. How many times have you been the one to figure out something, whether it was during Upside Down shit or not? How many times have you been the one with common sense? You’re more than a babysitter, my love. You’ve always been more than that to all of them.”
They laid there in silence for a few minutes, Steve soaking in Eddie’s words as Eddie continued to comfort him in the way he needed.
“I just feel like I need to be more useful. I don’t want them to get bored or annoyed because I can’t be part of their world,” he finally said, his voice shaking.
“Angel, they love you for who you are. Just like I love you for who you are. You fit where you fit because that’s what the group needs. They don’t need another Dustin to always make connections because of one obscure fact relating to something he read once when he was nine. They don’t need another El to fight their battles. They need the Steve who is going to go along with whatever they want to do so he can protect them if and when things go wrong. They need the Steve who is always there to support them even with the most mundane things.”
“I couldn’t even set up the tent by myself.”
“None of us could. I had help. That’s why I told El to help you. None of us can do stuff alone, love. You’re putting expectations on yourself that no one else is putting on you.”
Steve shuddered.
He’d been pretty famous for doing that for years.
Once his parents stopped caring at all, he started caring too much.
And now he expected more of himself than anyone else ever would.
He’d set himself up to fail. At least in his own eyes.
“Did that finally get into that concussed brain of yours?” Eddie said, smirk evident in his tone.
Steve playfully slapped his chest and hid his face against his tear-soaked shirt.
“I guess maybe it did. A little,” he said.
“Good. You know I love you more than the stars, right?”
“And the moon?”
“And the galaxies in space.”
Steve settled further against Eddie’s side.
“I love you, too,” he sighed out, feeling content for probably the first time this entire trip.
In the morning, he’d start over, let his brain rest. He’d make everyone breakfast and then help them all make sure they were prepared for their short hike. He’d pack them sandwiches and extra water bottles in case they ended up walking further than they planned. And when they all got back to the campsite the next night, he’d make s’mores with them.
He’d ignore the voice telling him that he wasn’t enough for any of them, and he’d be enough for himself.

outside the restaurant, there is
like
what if yosuke hanamura never realized he was an asshole and just grew up into a fucking Super Asshole and full blown sexist and thought wearing rose-tinted glasses was cool
i wonder if the rose-tinted glasses are purposeful, that seems like a very specific design choice, but I have no idea if that cultural touchpoint would exist in Japan as well. I'm going to continue eyeing is suspiciously.
Bro, I think Haru exclusively reads horticultural books and horror novels. I don't think she is your target audience.
That said, this fucking move of getting down on a knee to proffer up a book is incredibly over the top and dramatique, what is with this guy.
B R U H no. Haru will kill you. Don't do this. Trust me, I am doing you a solid, you don't wanna go through with this.
This is very kind of the boys though. Don't stand by while a dude pulls this shit.
That said, Haru could def kill this guy. I mean, it might be a tiny scandal for Okumura Foods but what else is new.
aaaaand we found our new Monarch clearly.
THE INSIDE OF THE CAMPER.... is kinda cute, I see what they meant about the 50s diner vibes, that's..... kind of really cute and frankly WAY better than what I imagine when I think of campers, which tends to be shitty faux-wood and bad linoleum or carpeting.
Futaba squeezing herself up onto the storage rack is really just a vibe too.
He's a light novelist, huh. I dunno how accurate it is, but I consider that a mix of manga and YA? Like, not necessarily written for younger audiences but written to be very digestible? And sometimes have interspersed illustrations? Good foundation for weird experimental shit but is very Genre.
what the fuck don't touch fucking cosplayers /horror
So there is tons of discussion and praise for Natsume online but it's all coming from Sendai.
Is he a local sensation? Like, there's already been ambient dialogue about people buying multiple copies of the book. How many of his million copies are the same people.... or is he going from city to city to spread the influence of his Jail?
HUH! Sidebar: If you have a Jail but you go to another location, does the Jail go with you or do you make another Jail? We've already established that once a Monarch is removed, the Jail remains in the Metaverse.
HMMMMM. That sounds like an interesting thread to pull but IDK if the game will play with it.
are they really going to keep calling him Gramps, he doesn't even give old vibes like Sojiro
also he's a grown-ass man, it's rude to keep referring to him by a nickname like that! the audacity!
are they serious
hey yusuke have you considered therapy? not maruki but like actual therapy?
earlier before we left, i missed the cap, but Futaba was reminding Yusuke his snack budget was 500 yen and he was like "but my rock salt" and I continue to be, like, SO concerned about Yusuke Kitagawa.
REVERIE LITERALLY PUMPS HIS FIST AS HE REPLIES TO RYUJI, L M A O.
Sleep is great, I say as someone who is going to bed the moment I hit post on this blog entry.
ANN FUCKING PUNCHES THE SIDE OF THE CAMPER AND TELLS THEM ALL okay ryuji bc ryuji was speaking in his normal volume which is outdoor voice for everyone else TO SHUT THE FUCK UP SO THEY CAN SLEEP.
FINALLY i can look around Sendai without Morgana shooing me back to the camper to continue the plot. AT LAST.
but i got work tomorrow so i gotta sleep, alas.

OKAY SO when i said my thoughts around carmy and bradley werent coherent at all I meant that quite literally 😭 i havent thought about it in detail aside from the rough idea BUT if i have to expand on it i’d say it could be something along the lines of denim through the decades? or taking into account what you said about james dean/marlo brando i think it would be fun to see a campaign centered around iconic moments of denim in pop culture too. Maybe recreating some movie sets and outfits and such.
BUT im also thinking something a lot more chill bc ik recreating movie sets n stuff can be 1) a hassle and 2) a lil cheesy, so considering that the people involved in the campaign would be people with an interest in vintage denim n such i was thinking about levis incorporating some vintage pieces from personal collections. Picture one of the countless denims carmy stores inside his oven (sob) or one of bradley’s staples too. Mix that with a limited edition line of ‘brought from the past’ jeans, jackets, etc. and i think itd be golden.
By no means am I a denim expert, I’m talking out of my ass here after a few minutes of research LMFAO but its fun to think about it.
I’m sure carmy would be WAYYY more hesitant to participate than bradley. The latter is probably ecstatic and doesnt let his manager (im guessing levis would be in contact with his manager) finish. As soon as the words levis and collab leave his mouth, Bradley's sold.
I think carmy would be interested in working with levis, a little flattered that they considered him. Maybe taken aback too bc im guessing he’s a very private person and doesnt talk much about his denim collection and such so levi’s def did their research lol. Still, i think he was going to turn them down and then Sugar and Syd found out and tried to convince him bc ‘its levis, u gotta say yes’ but it didnt exactly work and in the end it was Richie who replied to the email with something along the lines id be honoured to be a part of the campaign’ or smth weird in his attempt to impersonate carmen.
With the two of them on set, i quite frankly don’t know if they would interact or how that interaction would go. Think carmy might be too nervous to properly interact bc its a hectic environment. Maybe bradley saw him all closed up and semi alone and decided to strike a conversation with him, talking about denim and such. What do you think?
BTW im so sorry about the typos i keep making, i only notice after you respond LMFAO i swear my english is good, promise.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS!!! thank you so much for indulging me 😭😭 and no worries, i feel like we’re speaking in a language beyond english where we’re just throwing concepts at each other and we actually understand it. it’s beautiful.
i totally get it that recreating movie sets is a lot. what they can do is recreate looks inspired by these iconic movies (like james dean in rebel without a cause—carmy would look great in that!) they can do a studio shoot or an outdoor city shoot like JAW’s CK campaign (still not over that btw skshsjdhsj)
ok hear me out: carmy is reserved in his private life but i feel like deep down he likes being the golden boy. remember his monologue abt smoking ppl out wherever he works? and just the way he steps up to lead and plays up to people who wanna hear what he wants to say. i feel like with the restaurant on the rise, he’s bound to have done some interviews, and on one of them he went on a hyperfixation-fueled tangent abt vintage denim like the first episode.
and you’re so right, it still would take him a lot of nudging and jostling to say yes. i loooove the idea of richie very eloquently replying to the email and making carmy sound very eager and cordial 🤭 (i imagine he would be a very short emailer/texter if he ever does reply)
with carmy, i feel like it’s not so much that he dislikes hectic environments (how much more hectic can his kitchen get, right?) but it’s the kind of hectic that he can’t control. and it drives him nuts, and he’d take smoke breaks often and eventually, bradley goes with him although he doesn’t smoke. he’d say that he has been to noma a few times and he enjoyed it and they bonded over restaurants and food and all. he’d love to visit the bear some time, to which carmy is like “of course let me know anytime you’re in town”
(Bradley thinks carmy is one of the coolest people he’s ever met. Carmy thinks for someone who’s that famous, Bradley is super chill.)
#this is an unlikely duo that i am INTO#bradley bradshaw#carmy berzatto#carmy & bradley crossover#fx the bear#top gun maverick#footballer!bradley#ask ava

What is the terrain/climate of your Kingdom like, and what kinds of outdoor activities are popular there?
i love this question, and not just because i already have a map with which to answer it (big boy version here):
as you can see, there are a variety of biomes in uspana, which i've labeled according to this map from wikipedia. i generated this particular map 1724814 years ago when i started the story (an old version of it is on this page) but i didn't go through and label the regions until ... today. so, there's some slight inconsistencies. in the story, we've seen settings in most of these cities, but i will freely admit to ignoring the rules of Climate and Geography routinely. it's fiction; i'm allowed !!!! anyway. the capitals have historically been in coastal areas: nakawe is in a more desert-y location while canaris is in a tropical one. yaas, from which the house of tecuani comes, is in a tropical rainforest area. zurine's family, by contrast, are from a much colder, mountainous region in the west. i think elevation accounts for a lot of the variety; there are mountain chains that produce the colder climates as well as the deserts.
rowena & zurine visit her homeplace, which happens to be covered in snow at the time; city center of the same place
alfonso & rowena had their marriage ceremony in yaas with a great view of the forest; the family visited alam palace, which is pretty remote; view from alam palace; the paintings in this post are also meant to represent historical yaas; this outtake is what the "urban" part of yaas looks like in the 1930s; it looks like this a century later
german & barbie had a yachting day in canaris; train station in 1920s; canaris montage with rowena and alfonso
one of the palaces in nakawe is, as you can see, in a very dry area; meanwhile this is another palace in a different part of the area; another area
i actually can't remember where this is but it's temperate and coastal, i reckon; woo more by-the-water family time
zurine & fernando do a tour, which involves a stop in texict; ander's big speech was also in the same area
because the tourist destinations are canaris, nakawe, and sometimes yaas, i think the most well-known activities are in the categories of watersports and hiking. plenty of coastal areas and rivers to support fishing, swimming, paddle boarding, kayaking, boating, etc. there's probably ziplining and atv activities in certain areas, too. the alpine areas, i would imagine, have winter/snow sports. basically, uspana is large and diverse enough to support a ton of different outdoor activitis, as long as you're willing to travel to experience them. i have recently concluded they have a fabulous rail system, so it's not even hard !
#;long post#lmao rip all of those uncalled for links dsjfdgsg#i have THOUGHTS about my WORLD clearly :^)#reyes.worldbuilding

He has a great idea. Take 10 or 12 casinos and put them in their own boardwalk but you'd be on foot so it's it would be probably four city blocks along the strip and it'll go back about 10 city blocks and there are places for that and you're reorganize everything then they want to put in Mega Casinos so we would be towards the end of the strip in the Mega Casinos would be in on the strip itself. It's a way to retain our casinos without losing them to the max and to have a combined income and the combined people so we have some power there rather than just getting plucked out one by one it's it's an idea of our friends and he doesn't know if it's approved by his people and they say yes 'cause they want us to do something like that or it's gonna be a dragged out bloody war and we're just gonna lose. I think it's a good idea the courtyard would probably be three buildings that he wants he'd say mine would be like one of the mainstays in the middle but set back it's actually very attractive building that's why and they like the idea cause it's attractive there's a couple others they put on the strip and then they would go in a row on the left in a row in the middle in the row in the right and there'd be a Hewitt back and then the parking would be behind them probably more towards the back behind the strip and you would have people movers meaning right there you'd have outdoor or sheltered people movers now we have outdoors ones and you'd have a little tram and you can rent segues all sorts of things that move people around little taxis that are meant for that type it would be like a golf cart taxi you have them too it's kind of his dream to make these little mini taxis and those would have like designated place to drive on to keep people from doing too much walking on them and you could probably have a walkway over designated taxiways but people walk over the whole thing and the taxi was would go slow I like the idea of having walkways over it and escalators and several of them a bunch of them and really this is a great idea of having a big courtyard and calling it like little Vegas or old Vegas is better more appropriate and they're actually the ones who started it and they like old Vegas and we'd have old school stuff there the the meat shops the cigar shops the kind of old school they do it a little differently these days and we had an old Italian restaurants and people shining your shoes and we'd have some st ax like we used to and boy it's a great place for that so I'm I'm up for this idea i'd like to talk to them about it and it'll preserve it there is a movie that shows it getting attacked and it's along the strip it doesn't necessarily mean that it doesn't work for some of us but it might mean that it doesn't work and we might wanna pull out I looked at what the creature was destroying he's going right up the strip and destroying everything on the strip and it could be the max manipulating it and it's the female so we are going to be attentive but we would be the ones in there giving orders and I do understand that.

Now this kind of makes sense that they could be screwing up and get the thing hit. And hit bad and yeah I guess we would not be able to move those but we should talk about it he wants to at least it's something positive to do this is a great idea i've had several ideas like it mainly to move it to another spot and call it old Vegas which is a great idea but really to have them there would be easier safer too and there would be a rocket war. And boy what an idea and he says when you're in Vegas there's already a feeling of excitement and danger but you have all these cars right at your heels and crazy people on the sidewalk when we put in a courtyard we can have security and our vehicles and it's a lot more team and that's a great idea it is safer quieter and they can sell churro and they can sell cotton candy and pretzels and hot dogs and beverages and even edible stuff LOL it's true though you need a snack when you're walking around and there could be eateries with outside seating and it's a beautiful idea because Vegas has no buds no buds at all and it would be fun as hell having a nice steak dinner or you have a lunch after gambling and partying you have a big steak sandwich I mean you know it's just a wonderful idea we have more ideas but this is a winner. thank yoiu caa and he says your welcome. a trip there is tough for me and it went well. no robberies and so on and ahha true too

Okay so yesterday was technically a travel day but, as you'd expect, it started at the breakfast table on camp time with Kimmer who, in that moment, realized
"My dad would've loved this."
And yes. He would've.
Not even here with us. Or even at this specific camp or any of the camps at which we stayed.
He would've loved this.
The act of camping. The experience of it. Family. Friendship. Being in that moment of community a little. Being in those moments of solitude a little. Being inside the outdoors and being conscious of it.
A little.
Most of all, just being.
It's harder to do in the city, is my point.
And he would have loved.
This.
Yesterday was technically a travel day but, as you'd expect, we're near to where kimmer's aunt and uncle once lived, the place they called home, and we're near to where Kimmer's aunt is staying. So our first stop, leaving at 8:30, was in the opposite direction of where we're meant to go and, by 'n by, we pull into the drive of Kimmer's aunt's and uncle's old place where she sets about cleaning, clearing, and organizing their shed which has been pretty piled up inside with a random collection of this 'n that. She needs to get all of it into a state where she can easily determine, during her next visit, what stays and what goes.
Now, while she set about that project, I drove to a family laundromat we used once before, shortly after the death of Kimmer's uncle. This is yet another divergent experience from my Boy Scout days. Back then, whatever clothes you packed on a camping trip were the clothes you had for the entirety of that trip in whatever condition they were in or had become. But hey! Welcome to the modern world where you can Google map the nearest laundromat and return your clothes to a state of cleanliness they would otherwise not achieve until you got home.
The laundromat experience, by the way, is an interesting riff on camp time. It's definitely in the city, of course, but once you have a load of laundry going and there's nothing to do until it's done... you're just sort of being during those minutes whether it's reading a story (not news, not op-eds), whether it's writing, or whether it's just settin' and thinkin' or, as is sometimes said...
Just settin'.
Eventually I'm back at the homestead where Kimmer's showing off her hard work that is not only considerable but completely serves her purpose. She definitely did Future Kimmer a huge solid.
So now we're packing up to head out and I'm finding I'm doing that thing I do whenever I think I'm leaving some place for good: taking photographs of the place with an urgency that's misplaced. I'm sure I'll be back. Kimmer definitely will be back within a month.
Hmmm.
So what this really is... is a need to document. To preserve this place in my memory, to preserve the choices of people who purposefully crafted, who intentionally decorated, who made this place just. so.
My need is to document the people who invested the place with a personality that can both be seen and felt.
Yeah. That's definitely it.
And then the packing's done, the photos are taken, and we're on our way to see Jacquie who welcomes us in a courtyard shaded with a plentiful amount of trees.
We're there from around 130 to 215. Right at the beginning, though, when Jacquie spots Kimmer, a look of O-shaped surprise comes over Jacquie's face before Kimmer envelops her in a great big hug. And then I take my turn enveloping her in a great big hug.
We walk over to the shaded end of the table in the courtyard where Kimmer does some touch-ups with nail polish on some of Jacquie's fingers and some of Jacquie's toes.
We take a lot of pictures, of course. The pictures, these individually framed instances often capture more than what's there. It sets in amber some of the old Jacquie. Her smile. Her laughter. Her body language. She's definitely one of those human beings who would communicate just fine through a silent movie.
The conversation isn't a typical conversation of course. She makes clear statements that often trickle away in mid-sentence and we pick up wherever she left off until we can bring our words to the next place, the next topic, the next vibe, with which her brain can and does re-engage. Until her words run out and we pick up where she left off again.
And so on.
And so on.
Sometimes she has questions.
"How do you know my name?"
"How did you find me?"
"When did you get here?"
At which point the burden of conversation is on us and we carry it, toss it back and forth a little. It's not super hard for us to do. I just have to remember to focus on the present, to pretty much remain disconnected from previous events. Even if they happened only two days ago.
I definitely have to pay attention to questions or topics that don't register on her face... so I know to simply move on.
The true reward of these visits are moments that conjure the quintessential Jacquie. Moments where she looks you straight in the eye and begins with "Ya know..." as if launching into some grand story.
My favorite Jacquie, however, is the one who smiles and chuckles to herself, tilting her head down a little before smacking your arm with the back of her hand just before letting you in on the joke.
It's only a moment, though. A simple one. A powerful one. But her memories cannot sustain.
They just can't.
It's still meaningful to us, though. Because we do want to know that the essence of this woman we've known for most of our lives is still in there.
Even if we don't know exactly where.
A little aside: early in our visit, we were joined by Geraldine, an elderly African American woman who stopped by to listen in for a little bit before sitting down, making herself comfortable, and occasionally contributing a few words into our stream of conversation that seemed appropriate to her.
I do hope we see her again. She was very sweet. She was very attentive. She was very dignified.
And maybe I don't see that combination enough.
Yesterday was technically a travel day but, as you'd expect, we got a tiny bit distracted. We had, of course, managed some work at Jac & Dave's old place, gotten our laundry done, and spent meaningful time with Jacquie. So now we were on our way west to Laguna.
Except...
Except we were gonna stop for tacos along the way through town. We were gonna stop along the way... until Kimmer mentioned a better taco opportunity at the Soboda Casino Resort that is, technically, a few miles in the opposite direction. And since the tacos sounded yummier that way... that's the way we went.
The opposite direction.
When eventually we found our spot in the casino's parking lot, I thought maybe we were in trouble because almost immediately a motorized cart pulls up. Instead of being in trouble, though, we're being offered a ride. So on we hop, transported from a faraway spot in the parking lot to the very front doors of the casino through which we mosy, pass all the slot machines, until we arrive at a restaurant along the far wall at which are made the most heavenly tacos and molita (in pork and beef variations) followed by a pair of bottled Modellos.
Now, we are here for lunch. But we're also here to continue some business planning. As it turns out, part of our trip has turned into a business retreat in a number of parts, in different locations, on various dates.
When we finish off our impromptu business meeting... okay yes. It is time to head west to Laguna. By the time we arrive in the neighborhood, however, looking to meet up with Kimmer's cousin Derek and the boys to celebrate her nephew, Kyle's, birthday at Ruby's diner... by the time we're in the neighborhood, we're running a little longer than expected so Derek lets Kimmer know over the phone to meet them at Ruby's.
We're already heading north on the Pacific Coast Highway, though, so we turn around and head farther south to Ruby's with Derek and the boys pulling in shortly afterward around 630.
Okay so this... is an early birthday celebration for Kyle. Over the years, we've done this particular dinner at this Ruby's in lots of different ways with lots of different friends. My favorite time's probably the one on the roof with a bunch of friends and family including Kyle's cousin, our daughter, Linzy.
Still, no matter how we do it, the milkshakes are the stars of the show every time. I think the boys had chocolate chip mint this time while I had black cherry topped with chocolate sauce. And since this is Ruby's, the amount of milkshake is always more than the glass into which it's poured.
So they pour the extra into a metal cup and serve that up, too.
😁😁😁
It's around 8 by the time we finally check into Moro Campground overlooking Crystal Cove. It's dark out. Nighttime. And, while you can't see as many constellations like at Lake Perris, the sky is still quite astonishing.
We do have plans for the night, though, so we dive right into setting up the campervan for our overnight. Then we hit the showers which are a lovely kind of hot.
And then...
The main event of our evening: Uno.
Now I won't lie. Uno is the most competitive game we all play together. It's the most ruthless, screw over your neighbor relentlessly... game we play.
It's also boisterous. Loud. With just a hint of mockery and taunting. With definitely obvious whining and complaining and faux tantrums. With a lot of fun and laughter.
At one point, Kimmer throws down her last card, the one she's been hiding under the table, and declares herself the winner. Unfortunately for her, Kyle penalizes her four cards because the rule is you've got to declare "Uno!" when you're down to just the one card.
"But I forgot!" explains Kimmer.
Alas... no. She did not win. Instead she had to draw four new cards as opposed to dancing in the endzone.
We all gave her a hard time about this until finally she declared
"Okay I didn't forget. I cheated. Because I didn't want him to take my Fudging card!!!"
Only she didn't say "Fudging".
Whoops.
The "he" to which she referred, by the way, was me. Because I was holding a card that would enable me to swap cards with any player of my choosing. So I was waiting, biding my time, for someone to get their hand down to one.
Which turned out to be Kimmer.
Now, I won't say she did any additional cheating by taking random peeks at the cards I was holding or even the fact she kept declaring to one and all which nasty cards I was holding. I won't say she cheated in those ways because we all did that.
And we couldn't all be cheaters. Could we?????
Anyway. We had the best time playing Uno.
Afterwhich we kicked the boys out and went to bed around midnight.
The end.
😁😊❤️😉🙂

2.
How many countries have you visited? Two!
Flowers or chocolate? ....both is good.
My first mobile phone was... A pink and silver Samsung flip phone. I had a rainbow bubblegum wallpaper and a pink panther ringtone. I was the shit and I knew it.
The life advice I wish I could give my younger self is... I just wish I could have mothered her better. She struggles so much later in life because no one took care of her in that way.
A job I'd be terrible at... Anything high powered and fast paced. I’m too sensitive for that shit.
The superpower I want most is... I would love to be able to shapeshift!
When I retire, I'd like to move to... I don’t know what I’ll want when I’m that age!
Does pineapple belong on pizza? I think that whatever you think belongs on pizza, belongs there.
A flaw I have is... I’m so goddamn hard on myself.
Between the morning and the night, I prefer... Definitely early morning!
The best thing about the internet is... There's good in the bad and bad in the good. While its super cool to be able to connect with literally everyone on the planet...you’re open and exposed to literally everybody in the world all the time. While it’s full of inspiration and artwork...you feel the pressure to constantly be creating and comparing the quality/pace of your art to everyone else’s. While you have instant access to answers to literally any question you could have...I don’t know if we were meant to have that. You know?
Something I find boring is... Politics. Sports. Action movies.
What's a goal you have in life? I just want to be happy.
Between the city and the country, I always pick... I like smaller cities. Still stuff to do but there isn’t as much traffic or crime.
My comfort food is... Definitely soup. I’m a soup girl.
The video game I've played the most is... Definitely Sims.
One of my favorite stores is... I’ve really been digging TJ Maxx lately!
The best photo of my pet is... Like she’s ever taken a bad picture in her life.
A moment I enjoy during the day is.... When my husband gets home from work!
The music genre I listen to the most is... I like a good mix!
The vegetable I hate the most is... Definitely cauliflower. That shit is NASTY.
I deserve the award for... I don’t know if I’ve done anything worth an award..
Do you have any weird relatives? All of my relatives are weird. In-laws included!
Which do you prefer for exercising, gym or outdoors? Ew, none.
The language I love the most is... I can’t say I’ve ever felt feelings of love towards a language.
If I were a dessert I would be a... Ice cream cone.
The most memorable costume I've worn is... I don’t know!
The best thing about family is... There isn’t much I love about my family, to be honest. I’d trade them in a heartbeat.
My favorite routine is... I’ve been prioritizing keeping the house really neat lately so I love waking up in the morning, getting myself up and dressed, making the bed, and then getting everything neat and put away.
A song that defines me is... Lonely by Akon.
If I were a musical instrument, I would be... That really weird sounding Australian instrument that makes that warble-y sound.
I get overexcited when... I don’t know if I get overexcited. I’m not a kid anymore.
Between texting and calling, I prefer... It depends on the person but if it’s someone I like, I prefer a good chat on the phone/FaceTime.
A perfect date would be... I love a good breakfast date, followed by garage sailing in the summer or thrifting in the winter!
When I start reading a book and get bored on the second page I... I really don't read!
My favorite amusement park is... I don’t really like amusement parks, tbh!
I wish... I had a mom who actually loved me.
A great honeymoon would be... A tropical vacay, definitely.
My first crush was when I was... 4! I've been boy crazy from the get go.
My first computer was a... Very shitty HP laptop.
For me, freedom means... Not having to answer to anybody.
I would like to travel to... I really wanna go to Colorado for some reason.
A friend I have the most fun with is... My husband!
If I could meet any figure from the past, present or future, I would meet... PRINCESS DIANA. I want all the tea.
What's scarier, clowns or spiders? Spiders. Clowns can’t bite and poison you.
If I had a million dollars, I would spend it on... I’d buy a little house, pay off our cars, and then put the rest into a high interest savings account so we'd never have to work again.
If I could be anywhere else right now, I'd be... I’m good where I'm at thanks!
I learned how to swim when I was... I don’t think I’ve ever learned how to properly swim. I took swimming lessons when I was very young and the teacher forced my head underwater and yelled at me for being upset so I avoided them forever after that.

𝐈𝐬 𝐇𝐞 𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐞? (𝐏𝐭 𝟐)
(Akaashi x fem!/reader) -> Angst/Fluff? -> 3.2k
Synopsis: Akaashi is strolling through Tokyo, and on that day, meets a boy who looks all too familiar. One whose eyes remind him of you.
Part One: Is He Mine?
Part Three: Is Her Mine? (Part. 3)
Notes: Part two as promised! Maybe I’ll make a part three (haha >:)). Be sure to comment if you would liked to be tagged for the next part, and reblogs are always appreciated.
-> Also, for those tagged in this post, I’ll tag you in the next as well ^^
“Y/n...please tell me.”
“T-tell you what?” you asked nervously, as he felt just the same. Inhaling his breath, hoping he could keep calm.
“Is...is he mine?”
---
“Is he who’s?”
“Mine Y/n...is he mine?”
You stared at the gentleman. Though his question was reasonable (?), that was the first thing he was going to ask you?...after all of those years?...years of torment, resentment, and whatever else. Maybe you were overreacting, but yet again, you were a woman who stood by her morals. And that being the case, your instincts had said your reaction was as reasonable as his question.
Some part of you wanted to snap. To holler at Akaashi for asking such a ridiculous question, yet the other part...was scared. You felt anxious when thinking of a proper answer. Was Ryu his?.... If taken out of context, he could’ve been asking if Ryu belonged to him, and of course he didn’t. Ryu wasn’t an object that could be owned by merely anyone. He was his own person, and that being the case, wasn’t something that could’ve been held down. Yet even though you could’ve interpreted it that way, you knew what Akaashi really meant. Yet you didn’t exactly have an answer.
“Ryu?”
“Yeah...”
Akaashi seemed suspicious. He could tell you were hiding something, and even though very obvious, he didn’t want to assume. Hoping that you would confirm things so that you both could talk it out. Yet here you were, not giving him a response. He was confused to say the least, shouldn’t the answer have been easy? Ryu looked exactly like him, and plus, him not having a father was another takeaway. Using those facts should’ve given him enough confirmation.
But then again, maybe the answer wasn’t as easy as it should’ve been. What if Ryu wasn’t his?...what if Akaashi had made an assumption out of impulse, because of a lingering feeling he had. One of which you sparked for him to feel.
Maybe he was being delusional, and instead, was trying to make an excuse. An excuse to spend another minute, even a second with you there. Ryu was important to him as well. His or not, he respected that you had started a family, and was glad Ryu was a part of it. He adored Ryu, but he also admired you. Speaking of Ryu, the boy then clung onto you. He seemed confused about the interaction, and tried asking for clarification.
“His? *GASP* Am I Akaashi’s brother!? Momma, you never told me!” he smiled happily, ecstatic at the news.
“Eh-no dear, he’s not your brother,” you chuckled, for him to ask:
“Then what did he mean? What did you mean, Akaashi?” you then stared at Akaashi. You knew he was smart enough to play things through, and even so, you still panicked the slightest bit.
“I was wondering if you would be mine for the night, along with your mother. We could go grab dinner, or ice cream even,” you looked at him in shock as his eyes seemed determined. Needing an answer, and willing to get it in whatever scenario possible.
“But what about Kuroo?”
“Oh my, I forgot about that,” you then glanced at your watch.
“Kuroo?...but how-oh….” Akaashi then thought about how you and Kuroo were very close friends. So close that sometimes, he would even find you hanging out with Kuroo, over himself. Though it wasn’t because you liked him (in that way), rather, you were both very good friends. Akaashi let it be since you both had mutual trust, and Kuroo was someone he was also friends with. Besides, Akaashi also respected your personal life with others, and so did you for him.
They still talked till this day, and not once had Kuroo mentioned you having a child. But to be fair, Kuroo never mentioned you. That being because both you and Akaashi had broken up, and it would’ve been an uncomfortable topic. Still, Akaashi found it strange. If Kuroo knew, wouldn’t Bokuto have as well?...meaning that Akaashi would’ve known by now? His thoughts continued to trail as you looked at him in disbelief.
You did have plans with Kuroo, but then, you also had a couple hours until he’d come around. Even so, you didn’t want to spend that time with Akaashi. He was one of the last people you needed to talk to. The grudge which still stood in your heart, clenched with each second he stood there. The anger which he had gifted you, was something that was eager to return. As you had thought this, you then stared at your son. He seemed thrilled to be with such a man, as he gripped onto Akaashi’s hand in excitement, saying:
“Yay! We get to eat together!”
“We’re going to have so much fun!”
“Let’s try some bubble waffles!”
You then remembered that even if you had felt that, your son instead felt joy being with Akaashi. And that being the case, you didn’t have the right to take that happiness away. After all, Ryu was not yours either. He wasn’t someone you could drag away from events, just because you had conflicts with a person. Though there were times where doing so was appropriate, was now really such an event?...not even you could answer that. But even though you couldn’t, his smile which brightened the mood, had answered for you.
“Okay buddy, slow down. Fine, we can go with brother...Akaashi. We’ll meet Kuroo sometime later, just let me text him.”
“Okay mom! Akaashi, Up!” you then eyed the boy, for him to insist regardless.
“Please mom! He’s so tall, and I can see everything-”
“Ryu no-”
“Sure, what not?” Akaashi then grabbed the boy, placed him on his shoulders, and secured his legs with his hands. You then sighed. If Akaashi had agreed, what could you do? You then texted Kuroo, grabbing your bag firmly as Akaashi spoke:
“I know a place where we could grab ramen. If not, we could instead-”
“No, ramen is fine,” you said in a stoic tone.
“Okay...then let’s get going.”
---
The walk to the outdoor stand was awkward. Well...for you and Akaashi at least. The last time you two spoke, was the day he broke things off. He never reached out to you during that time, and now...here you both were. Expected to have a lengthy conversation, and to enjoy yourselves. Key word, “expected.” Though it would’ve been nice if you both could have talked care free, it wasn’t going to happen. That event occurred when both parties have mutually moved on. From Akaashi’s perspective, he still had lingering thoughts, yet kept them to the side. Going on with his life as he expected you did yours. Though he thought you had moved on, you had thought differently for different reasons.
Even though you both had your differences, Ryu was there. Entertaining the both of you separately. He complimented you one second, and played with Akaashi the next. You had never seen Akaashi so enthusiastic with a child before. Though he wasn’t going all crazy, and acting like a kid himself, he was being a lot more open. Talking back and forth with Ryu, giving nice remarks, and also rewarding him...with that beautiful smile he bestowed.
Even so, you tried to ignore it. Remembering that this entire ordeal was for Ryu, and not for your observations.
“We’re here. What do you want Ryu?”
“Hm, could I get the one with Tonkatsu? I’ve been craving it all day!”
“Haha, sure buddy. And...you, Y/n?”
“I’m not hungry, you guys go ahead,” Akaashi then sighed, obviously not believing you.
“We’ll get two Tonkatsu ramens, along with Fukuoka ramen.”
“Sure, that’ll be $18.35 please.”
“Debit-”
“Um...I can pay for both Ryu and I,” you said, as you tried scrambling for your wallet. Akaashi then tapped the machine, placing his hand on your own (the hand in your purse).
“It’s fine. Afterall, I already paid,” you shook your head, but let it go as Ryu pointed to a table.
“Come on! Let’s sit!”
---
“Akaashiii~!”
“What is Ryu?”
“How do you know mommy? Mommy would never talk to a stranger, so that means you both know each other.”
“Oh...well, um,” Ryu was truly a bright child. One who caught on a little too quickly. He really did remind you of his father. Quick witted, yet wise with his tongue. Being certain to use specific words or sentences, to ensure/secure his curiosities.
“Well...mommy and Akaashi were very good friends,” you replied.
“Ahhh. So if that’s the case, why have I never met him before?”
“Well you see-”
“It’s because I live further away from you guys,” Akaashi answered.
“But so does Kuroo,” Akaashi then pondered, and placed his hands together.
“Hm, I guess you’re right. Well, maybe your mother has an answer,” the two black haired boys, then stared at you. Both were awaiting for an answer, and yet both had different intentions. One wondering out of pure curiosity, while the other...was waiting for an explanation. One which could clear up any, if not every misconception.
“Well sweetie, sometimes good friends have to part ways. Everyone has their reasons, but most of the time…” you then looked at Akaashi.
“It’s because it’s for the better,” his gaze was locked onto yours. The stare was unreadable. It didn’t feel tense, yet it was. Was it cold, hurtful?...you wouldn’t have known. But what you did know was that Akaashi was good, too good at hiding his thoughts. So good that when together, he would let things slip without reaction. Sometimes that was a great thing...and others...not so much.
“Why would it be a good thing? You both were best friends!” you then placed a hand on his head, patting it gently.
“Well...friends have to grow up. That doesn’t mean you can’t see them again, but, what it does mean is that you’ll have some time...alone. And that time...is used for you to grow.”
“Ahh, I see mom! Is that why we don’t see Kuroo often?”
“Haha, no sweetie. That’s actually because we live further away. If Kuroo lived in our city-”
“He would be living with us, right?”
“Hm...I guess so,” Akaashi then looked in the other direction. There was no tint of emotion, just...silence.
“Akaashiiii, the ramen is here!”
“Oh, is it Ryu?”
“Yeah, it is!” your bowls were then slid over. Ryu stared at Akaashi’s hands, and at first, Akaashi wasn’t sure as to why. Ryu didn’t touch his food, and at first, he was worried that the boy didn’t like it, but then noticed he was holding a pair of scissors. Pointing them towards the gentleman. Though confused, he then caught onto Ryu’s gesture.
“Dear I can-” before you could finish your sentence, Akaashi started to cut his noodles. Making them bit size for the boy. It seemed like second hand nature, yet something new to him. Though, you would’ve felt more comfortable doing it yourself, you weren’t complaining as the job was now done.
“Thanks Akaashi!”
“No problem Ryu. Now, let’s eat.”
---
You all then finished your ramen. Though you had said you weren’t hungry, you couldn’t help but eat it. After all of those years, Tonkatsu ramen was still your favourite, and Akaashi still knew. He was glad that he remembered the littlest of details. Ones which may have been overlooked. Ones he made sure to be attentive to. Not only that, but he was glad Ryu had enjoyed the meal as well. He truly was your son as he had the same tastes as you. Akaashi found it quite cute, and found it even more adorable as he ran out of the restaurant, shouting:
“Mom, Akaashi! I want to play at the park!”
“Hm...it’s a little late buddy,” Akaashi said, for you to respond:
“It should be fine. We’ll be over here watching Ryu. No funny business young man!”
“Okay mommy!” the young boy then climbed the slide, as Akaashi sat on the bench. Patting on it, indicating that you sat beside him. And so...you did. Your legs together, hands as well, as your head looked down. He then sighed, asking:
“Do you feel uncomfortable? I can move if-”
“No...it’s fine. We’ll be leaving soon, so no need to worry.”
“Is Kuroo picking you up?” you then nod as he did the same.
“I see...so...how have you been?”
“Oh...um...I’ve been okay. I’ve done better, but...yeah.”
“Hm, I see,” you really didn’t want to be in this situation. Maybe for him, it seemed civil, but to you...it was awkward. Neither of you knew what to say, and neither did you try to hide it (successfully at least). Akaashi then twitteled with his thumbs. A rare sight you would see every once in a while. Akaashi was a well spoken person, and usually had something to say in a well mannered way. But when he didn’t, or didn’t know what to say, he would play with his thumbs. Hoping that something would spring to mind.
“You must be having fun.”
“Fun doing what?” he looked at you.
“Playing with your thumbs,” you smirked, for him to put his hands away.
“Not really.”
“Hm...so...what have you been up to?” you asked, curious and yet not wanting to know.
“Nothing much...just work and well, Bokuto and I still hang out from time to time.”
“Ahh, really? I’m glad. You both were the bestest of friends.”
“And still are,” he smiled, while watching Ryu climb the monkey bars.
“Hm, you have a girlfriend yet?” he then paused for a moment, for him to answer:
“No...not yet. I haven’t found anyone interesting.”
“Ah, that’s unfortunate.”
Was it really?...you wouldn’t know how to think after today. If you hadn’t met Akaashi here...you would’ve thought otherwise. Glad that he hadn't found someone else, for his actions sickened you. Such a gentleman, yet someone so cruel. You would feel awful if he had grasped someone, just as tightly as he did to you. Sprinkling you with such intoxicating, yet graceful pleas, and yet he left you there to rot in such doing. Such a passionate man, yet that same person could find passion in such coldness.
For the past years, you had found him to be utterly despicable. After that one event...you couldn’t help but think that. But even so, after seeing him with Ryu today...you couldn’t help but melt. The two were so sweet together, and even though you hated to admit, had a spectacular relationship within just hours. They really acted as the best of friends, and Akaashi seemed to enjoy it. Not only that...but his smile...it was one which was truly admirable.
You then stared at Akaashi, while he watched Ryu. He really hadn’t changed. He was calm, quiet, and reserved. His posture was on parr with the rest of his body. His hair was styled more neatly, and actually, it had grown a bit, along with his height. His figure, a lot larger than what it was in university, and his cologne smelled of lavender, along with a hint of pepper. It was a strange combination, but it worked. He really had grown up to be even more attractive. And that being the case, it surprised you that he didn’t have a partner. Said attractiveness, along with the kindness of his nature...had drawn you in, and yet dragged you out. Leaving you in a confused, and undecided state of mind.
He then took note of your stare, and grinned. Secretly glad that your attention had averted towards him, yet, he was trying to be subtle. You truly looked astonishing tonight. Even after a couple of years, you still looked the same. That same highschooler who he had fallen in love with, the one who had constantly supported both him, and Fukurodani. The only person who truly understood such a stoic man. That same girl he would forever hold a place in his heart for. Although, now you weren’t just a sweet girl, but now, a beautiful lady instead.
Deep down, he would’ve wished for a space to open. Allowing such a lady to make way into his heart. Hoping said lady, would do the same. And maybe, just maybe...a prince could join you both as well. Making his thoughts come true in the utmost blessed way.
He made sure you didn’t catch onto his stare, the one which he had latched onto you. His attempts were taken very seriously, as he didn’t want to make things too obvious. Unfortunately, you did catch him in the act, and turned away, embarrassed.
“Hm,” he smirked, as you fished for your phone.
Kuroo ᕙ(`▿´)ᕗ
-> ‘Are you still coming?’
-> ‘Of course. Sorry, traffic delays. I should be there in ten.’
-> ‘Okay...see you soon’
You were about to turn of your phone, to then see Kuroo text:
-> ‘Also...don’t worry too much. You can do this Y/n, good luck, and I’ll be there soon.’
You then smiled, and Akaashi took note, thinking:
‘She’s probably talking to her…ah...’ he sighed at the thought, to then ask:
“Are you talking to your husband?...you seem happy,” he smiled. Even though smiling was a happy gesture, he couldn’t help but make it the opposite. Making his grin, feel ever so agonizing.
“Ah...well...that was Kuroo,” Akaashi then batted a brow, surprised to say the least. He’d only seen that look on you when you were vulnerable. Whether you were scared, or secretly happy. Regardless, that was only around him...not even Kuroo had seen such a stare. But now that he saw you in such a state, it made him question if you, and Kuroo were in a relationship. That being the reason why he never brought it up, and vice versa.
“Oh...I see. So that means,” Akaashi then started to think. Yes, the younger child looked like him, but then, there was also resemblance between both Ryu, and Kuroo. They both had black hair, Ryu had a peckish, yet sweet smile (like Kuroo...minus the sweet-), and the bits of information fit logically. If you and Kuroo had Ryu, it would’ve made sense.
Both childhood friends who had grown together, to then realize what they wanted after he...had left you. Starting a family, and being with each other?.... Ryu looked like he could’ve been Kuroo's, or anyone for that matter. But even if Akaashi would have liked to think that way, the connection was too uncanny to deny.
Even so, Akaashi was still suspicious. Wondering as to why Ryu would be so reluctant towards his father. Why he would call “Kuroo,” well…”Kuroo,” and just as to why you both lived so far away. Maybe you both had a situation?...but then again, wasn’t Kuroo on his way to pick you up? Akaashi was confused, and felt like he was over-thinking things. Maybe Ryu wasn’t his...and Akaashi was instead looking for something...that wasn’t there...nor his to compensate.
“That means what?...” he then locked his eyes, with yours. Though he was someone who was hard to read, you could tell how desperate he was. His stare, piercing right at you, hoping he could get an answer.
“Y/n...could you please tell me...if he’s...mine?” you then saw the sorrowful expression, which struck him. The guilt which seeped in, had dug even further. Not sure how to tell him, nor how to phrase things. Your hands clenched, inhaling slowed, as your body trembled. He seemed just as scared for your response, to then hear:
“He’s-”
“He’s mine, Akaashi...Ryu is mine,” Kuroo said, for silence to then fill.

🌈 celebration for Keyleth, 💛 Morning for Vex and 🥶 Winter for Percy?
🌈 - Celebration - Keyleth
Every year there's a celebration of the sealing of Vecna. A celebration of Vasselheim being saved. A celebration of Vox Machina.
It is bright and it is beautiful, it is full of genuine joy and celebration of gods and people alike who did things small and great. It celebrates those who helped rebuild as well, and helped recover bodies and helped make things as they should be. It is a moment all faiths and even atheists can celebrate, beause none apart from the Whispered One's cult really wanted Vecna to be so present in the world - and even then, some may have had misgivings. It's meant for everyone - even those celebrated - and it's something Keyleth always recieves many invitations for - as Voice of the Tempest, as Keyleth of Vox Machina, as our friend in some letters. Usually, regardless of her own feelings, she attends at least one, usually the celebration in Whitestone or in Vasselheim.
It takes many years before Keyleth can really enjoy it though, can separate her own grief from the sheer joy and relief it has brought so many people
💛 - Morning - Vex
Vex is a morning person! *musical trill*
Vex is a morning person (Percy is not). Vex likes to rise early, with the dawn, likes to get up and get on with things, doesn't even need coffee in the morning usually but she likes a mug anyway, just as a habit. She likes getting up as the sun rises and getting her gear and going out for a patrol - usually with Trinket, sometimes with her hunters - and she loves watching the world wake up around her, seeing the morning glories bloom brightly as they only do before noon, watching the daisies live up to their names and open as the sun spills over them, seeing the dew glisten on the grass and on the spiderwebs.
There is a beauty in those quiet, still moments before everything wakens, and she loves it.
The only times she doesn't are when she's dealing with morning sickness and it is her one single least favourite thing about having her children - but then it turns out half the children are morning people too, and she gets to share those beautiful still moments with them, and she can't mind it that much in the end.
🥶 - Winter - Percy
Percy has some of the most mixed feelings about winter it is possible for anyone to have because... the Briarwoods attacked in winter. He escaped in Winter. He fell in a goddamn river and almost drowned in winter.
But also ... he remembers those deep, northern, mountain winters. He remembers being dragged into snowball fights with his siblings. He remembers the fronds of ice crawling across the windowframe of his little laboratory-cum-workshop before the heat of inside melted it. He remembers the snow and ice tracked into the main hall before the household members peeled off their outdoors boots and replaced them with their indoor slippers by the settle.
He loves winter. Winter is home. Nowhere else in Tal'Dorei does the winter quite feel the same - Vasselheim reminded him a little, but that's Issylra and it didn't have the same energy as Whitestone in the winter. Westruun did when it got frozen by Skysunder, but that doesn't count - that was supernatural. The Frostweald was a little alike, but that was more the Parchwood than the city and he was ever a city boy.
Winter in Whitestone reminds him - and it reminds him of that terrible night when he lost everything he'd ever known, that too - and so he loves the winters, and loves the nostalgia, and loves the warmth and cheer as Winter's Crest approaches and loves that he has friends and at least some of his family back and he can sit in a warm chair, in front of a roaring fire, watching the snow come down outside - but the worse memories are still there. The grief is still there.

Hey! I’m re-watching GG 4x13 and I’m a sucker for the rio / beth / nick angst. Do you know of any fics that have flirty beth x nick vibes which showcase rios jealousy? Our boy is really wearing his heart on his sleeve at the end of the series and i’m loving it. We were robbed of season 5!!
Hey! He really is and we really were. I still can't believe we're not watching a new season right now.
Tragically, I don't think there's many fics featuring Nick period, let alone ones which play into the angsty love triangle. It's such a shame because I thought the dynamic was really fun, especially given Beth and Nick weren't even into each other and Rio kept revealing his hand over nothing, haha.
But! There are some, and some really great ones too!
(Under a cut so I can include excerpts! 😊)
It’s sudden, the anger that bubbles up and bursts. He came barging in here, upending her plans, throwing her whole evening out of alignment, making her feel all kinds of things she has no business feeling, and for what? To piss off his brother—cousin—whatever?
“I’m not a...a toy,” she bites out, startling him into looking at her. His eyes are dark and unfathomably deep, one eyebrow arched in question. “You don’t get to argue over who gets to play with me.”
He laughs again, but it’s so brittle the sound seems to break apart the moment it meets air.
“That what you think’s happenin’?”
“Isn’t it?”
Shiver for Me by ms_scarlet / @mego42
Nick invites Beth to a fundraising gala to help her network, and they run into Rio. Sexy dancing ensues, and Beth and Rio's history leans heavy over both of them. All of Meg's fics are great, but this one has such a terrific underscore of sexual tension and really leans into Beth's ambition and desire to prove herself. It works on so many levels, and I love it a lot.
-----
And she’s staying in her lane. She’s keeping her head down.
The event with Nick doesn’t really count, right? It’s barely related to Rio at all. She’s being smart and building a new business relationship. She doesn’t have any fancy family members to make all her crimes go away.
She could use a city councilor owing her a favor.
If It Feels Good by @septiembrre
When Nick invites Beth to the gardening program's annual fundraiser, Beth struggles with the implications. This one isn't finished yet (although fingers crossed part two's still coming!), but it's such a great set-up. It's got great Beth POV, flirty Nick, inevitably jealous Rio, and feels full of promise.
-----
“Seriously, Chris. Why’d you bring her here?” Marissa repeats her question.
Rio takes a long swig of his drink. It’s some craft beer that Nick brought over. He had picked it up at a local micro brewery that he’s been goin’ on and on about. Something about some pre-campaign event he’s hosting in their fuckin’ outdoor beer garden.
“It’s nothin’,” he answers flatly.
Marissa throws her head back, and nearly cackles. “It’s not nothing, don’t give me that shit.”
Rio rolls his eyes. There’s no one like family to call you out.
(without) recourse by mydearmoon
Okay, this isn't exactly what you're looking for, but Nick's there, and it involves snarky Rio POV, haha. After Beth leaves Rosa's in 4.06, Rio's interrogated by his family, especially by his cousin, Marissa. This is just really fun, with some delightful dialogue and rich Rio backstory, so it's worth checking out.
-----
“Don’t worry, Elizabeth kept me company while you were out there catching balls,” Nick winks at her. It’s meant as a slight to Rio and football, more than a compliment to her.
Nick’s comments must roll off his shoulders because Rio doesn’t react. He does finally look at her as Nick keeps going.
“You keep running up and down that field for four years and whatdya’ got to show for it, Cam Newton?”
Rio’s face is blank - peaceful, almost. Like he doesn’t hear the fighting words coming out of his cousin’s mouth. Beth frowns and shifts her attention back to Nick.
Watermelon Sugar by zetuslapetus / @querenaxx
A college AU focused on football player Rio, this fic recaptures canon dynamics in the new setting so well. It's fun and sexy and full of charm, and has bonus Ruby x Stan which is v important for me personally.
Those are some that I really love, but I'm sure there are more out there! If anyone reading has any recs for anon, you should add them!😊
#one day i'll finish my beth x rio + nick fic#'one day i'll finish...' feels like my catchphrase for all my fics these days#*sobs*#but anyway haha#these are all great!#and it's such a fun dynamic!#beth x rio#beth x nick#nick + rio#nbc good girls#gg fic#fic recs#welcome to my ama

WHEN: May 23rd, 2022AE
WHERE: Outdoor Marketplace, Obsidian City
WHO: Maia + @lixinzhou
AVAILABILITY: closed
It was late when Lixin contacted her, and Maia didn't know whether to be more surprised by the time or the name flashing on her screen. He had only bought from her in a few select occasions before, when the scarcity of pure ethereum drove him desperate enough to seek the inferior street product. Lixin was a doctor, after all, a man who could by all means afford ethereum of verifiable quality.
She supposed no one was immune to the substance's tight, bruising grip. If nothing else, it meant good business.
Maia waited on the usual spot behind the marketplace's stalls, and soon enough her eyes found Lixin in the distance, walking toward her with as much anxiety as expected. With a bag in one hand and a mug of ale from a nearby bar in the other, she couldn't help the grimace as he came closer, his shaky demeanor now much more visible. "Shoot, boy, you really don't look like you're having a great night."

series index
Spring means spring showers. Usually that’s something Taehyung kind of enjoys, because it means the weather is getting warmer, and who doesn’t love curling up in bed on rainy mornings (or afternoons, or evenings)?
This spring, though, is different. The boys, after hearing Taehyung shamefully confess that he’d kicked you out, assuming that you’d head right over to one of them, had immediately torn into him for being an irresponsible owner. They were especially upset because he hadn’t told them the entire story, ashamed to let them know that he’d started a sexual relationship with his pet human and not ready to talk about the whole imprinting debacle. To them, he’d simply lost his cool over something petty and done something stupid.
Then they’d organized and strategized, planning to comb through Seoul to try and find you. It was a good thing that all of them were predator hybrids, with enhanced abilities to sniff you out. This rain, though… it was making things difficult, washing away your residual scent. It was bad enough that they were trying to track you two weeks after you’d gone missing, but it had been consistently raining this whole time, and that meant it would be next to impossible to track you down using your scent.
Spring showers meant another problem: no one was picnicking if it was raining. Well, it wasn’t like there were many anyway since it was still cold out – the boys assured you that during summer, they came in hordes – but between the tents and rented heaters, there were still people who came out sometimes, just to spend a little time outdoors once in a while. Hybrids were made sturdy, after all, and weren’t as susceptible to the cold as humans.
It was another week before Taehyung got to Hangang Park. A week of combing through every street, back alley and underground pass in the part of Seoul that he’d been assigned. At the very edge of Seoul, Hangang Park was one of the last places that they hadn’t looked and hope that they would find you was running low. You could be anywhere by now, perhaps having begged a ride or train ticket to another city even.
In the week that they’d been out looking for you, you’d been spending a lot of time inside with the boys. Since it was cold, all of you tended to huddle together in a puppy pile that was uncomfortably reminiscent of the big snuggle fests you’d enjoyed in the past with Taehyung and his bandmates. All the free time that all of you had meant that you spent a lot of time engaging in the only fun thing homeless poor people could afford, and you’d more than once thought sardonically that since you weren’t getting much food, it was a good thing you were getting so much protein.
After all that time spent apart, your reunion with Taehyung was almost anticlimactic. You’d squirmed free of Youngbae and Jiyong, who were currently napping, to go use the public restroom. When you were done, you were drying your hands on your shirt while walking out of the little hut that housed the toilets when you saw him. Or at least, someone who looked suspiciously like him from the back. He was wearing one of Taehyung’s favourite shirts, too, a long-sleeved silk button-down that you’d taken to and from the dry cleaners many times before.
For a second, it felt like time had stopped as you stared at the wide expanse of the man’s back. It took you back to a time that really wasn’t that long ago, but seemed like a different lifetime. So much had changed about you, and your life, and the way you lived.
Then the man started turning around and you realized that it was, indeed, Taehyung. Needless to say, you couldn’t leave quickly enough. You didn’t know why he was here, but you definitely didn’t want him seeing how low you’d sunk now. Swearing inwardly, you darted off, back to the tent behind a convenience store that was now your home.
When Taehyung first scented you, he almost thought he was hallucinating. It was just so unlikely to him that you would be here, of all places, when he’d all but lost hope of finding you ever again. It wasn’t until he turned around that he saw, out of the corner of his eye, a figure running away, and realized that it was, indeed, you. Immediately, he gave chase, yelling your name so you’d turn around.
Instead, you just ran faster, practically diving back into the tent where the other boys were and zipping it up tight. Daesung stirred, holding a hand out to you. “What’s up?” he slurred. You took his hand and cuddled close to his side, not sure how to explain things and just hoping that Taehyung would leave. Why was he here, anyway? He should be busy right now with promoting their comeback album; it wasn’t a good time for the band to be picnicking.
“Y/n!” Taehyung was standing right outside the tent now, and you closed your eyes stubbornly, tucking your face into Daesung’s chest. He’d been absently stroking your hair, but when he heard Taehyung, he propped himself up on his elbow.
“It sounds like someone’s looking for you,” he pointed out rather unnecessarily, raising a brow at you. You rolled your eyes at him in response.
“Y/n, please, let’s go home!” Taehyung continued, and you groaned, turning onto your belly and burying your face in your hands.
Jiyong, who was famously grouchy when he woke up, snarled as he unzipped the tent. “Who are you, and what the fuck do you want?!” he growled.
Taehyung blinked, slightly surprised at the hostility. “Uh, is Y/n-ssi here?” In the unexpected situation, his speech became polite.
Seunghyun came up behind Jiyong, frowning. He’d developed something of a soft spot for you – well, as much as was possible, anyway, when all of you were scrounging for survival. “What’s it to you?” he asked rudely.
“Uh, I’d like to speak to her, if possible?”
“I don’t want to talk to you,” you objected. You had no interest in anything he could say to you at this point. Was he here to scream at you again? That seemed like overkill, all things considered, but since there was nothing else you could imagine, it remained the most likely scenario in your mind. You didn’t want him seeing you like this, either. If he was going to hate you, you’d rather he at least remember you the way you’d been as a pet, not as a homeless stray.
“Y/n, please.” The tone of his voice gave you pause – it was weary and sad, and despite your best efforts, you couldn't stop yourself from wanting to comfort him. You'd spent half your life attuned to his every need and it was difficult to turn that off suddenly.
With a reluctant sigh, you pushed past Jiyong and Seunghyun, who were blocking the entrance. "What is it?" you asked. You tried not to make eye contact with Taehyung - he'd always been perceptive, and you didn't want him staring into your soul again, afraid of what he might find there.
“Y/n… please come home,” Taehyung pleaded. With you standing in front of him, he could see properly the toll that the past three weeks had on you. You’d lost a lot of weight and your jawline was sharper than it had ever been, you looked tired and messy, your skin was starting to break out due to lack of proper nutrition and access to skincare products, and you smelled… not that great, which wasn’t a surprise since you’d had about two showers in the last three weeks.
Still, you crossed your arms over your chest stubbornly and looked away. “I don’t want to,” you objected. You could still hear his harsh words ringing in your ears, but more than that, the shame you felt at encouraging your unusual relationship when you should have stopped it was weighing heavily on you, and you didn’t want to go back and face that.
“Y/n-ie, please? I know I was mean and awful, and I’m sorry about that. Please come home,” he tried again, but you refused to even look at him.
“Stop it, leave me alone,” you whispered, hugging yourself protectively.
Finally, his shoulders slumped. He couldn’t handle being the cause of your distress anymore, even if he did think that you would be better off back at home with him. “Okay,” he accepted, his voice quiet and dejected. “I’ll go if that’s what you really want, but you’re welcome to come home any time, okay?”
You nodded stiffly, waiting for him to leave.
When he turned away disappointedly and walked off, you turned back to the boys to find all four of them staring at you. “What?” you asked slightly defensively.
“Who was that, baby?” Youngbae asked.
“Uh, it was my previous owner.”
“And he wanted to take you home?”
“Uh, yeah?” More uncertainly this time, not sure where they were going with this.
“And you said no?” Jiyong butted in incredulously.
You shrank in on yourself at the volume and tone of his voice. “I don’t want to go back with him,” you almost whimpered, your hands bunching up the fabric of your shirt anxiously.
“Baby… why not?” Seunghyun asked.
Your mind stalled. You didn’t want to tell them the real reason, afraid that they would look at you differently or even kick you out of their group. “We… had a fight,” you said rather vaguely instead.
“And you’re still mad at him? Did he do something wrong?”
“Yes, he kicked me out,” you said pointedly. Wasn’t that enough?
“Baby… he clearly feels bad about that if he came to ask you to go home,” Daesung pointed out reasonably.
“That doesn’t change the fact that he kicked me out,” you grumbled petulantly. “What if he does it again? Then I’ll end up right back here.”
“And what if you do?” Seunghyun asked. “Even if he kicks you out again in a week, that’s a week that you get to spend with a roof over your head, and access to food and water.”
You blinked at Seunghyun. Out of all the things he could have said, that wasn’t really what you’d thought he would say, but it made sense somehow. Living on the streets was difficult. You hadn’t had a hot meal in three weeks, and even though the hunger pangs kept the nausea at bay, picking at hybrids’ half-eaten food wasn’t anyone’s idea of a good time.
It must seem so shallow and ridiculous to these boys, who’d been living on the streets all their lives, that there was someone offering you a perfectly good home and you didn’t want it. Why? Because of your feelings? Ultimately, did that matter? You began to doubt yourself and your reasoning, wondering if you were being silly.
Still, your mind wouldn’t stop replaying the memories of Taehyung forcibly kicking you out of his house, and you gnawed on your lip uncertainly. Would it really be okay?
“Sweetie, it seems like there’s something more keeping you from wanting to go back.” Youngbae, ever the astute one, guessed. “Do you want to talk about it?”
You shook your head slowly. It might seem tempting, but you didn’t know how they would react to hearing about your sexual relationship with your hybrid owner. You’d lost enough; you didn’t want to lose your new family too, especially when their protection was all that was keeping you from being out on the streets alone. The memory of the two nights you’d spent wandering around the streets of Seoul, lost and alone, were enough to keep your mouth shut out of caution and fear.
“That’s fair, but is it worth living like this?” he asked, gesturing towards the tent where the five of them had been living practically on top of each other.
“You live like this,” you objected. “We’ve been fine, haven’t we?” you continued, a little more uncertainly now. Were they just too polite to tell you that they were tired of you and wanted you to leave?
All of them exchanged glances, before turning back towards you, serious expressions on their faces. “Y/n… any blind fool can tell that you’re not made for this life,” Seunghyun began. “The rest of us were born on the streets and we know how to handle ourselves.”
“I know how to handle myself,” you protested, your hackles rising. Hadn’t you been doing your part to contribute to the group? Thinking about it too hard made you feel a little unsettled, like you were about to be booted out of another family, so you tilted your chin upwards in defiance.
Daesung stepped in, ever the peacemaker. “You’ve been doing really well, sweetie, but all of us can see how difficult this is for you,” he pointed out.
“What- what do you mean?”
“Well… your soft hands that have clearly never done heavy lifting, your fussiness about food, your general demeanor…” Jiyong started listing things that all of them had noticed over the past couple of weeks, only stopping when Seunghyun nudged him to be quiet.
“The point is… this life is clearly not suitable for you,” Seunghyun explained. “And even if things are bad between you and your owner right now, he’s willing to make an effort, and it seems like going back with him is the best thing for you.”
You bit your lip. “You really think so?”
“I think if you have to eat any more cold ramen noodles you’ll kill yourself,” Jiyong said dryly, and your cheeks heated, remembering the day that all you had to eat was cold, congealed half-eaten instant noodles. You thought you’d covered up your distaste, but apparently not. In your defense, it had been a soup ramen and the noodles had absorbed all the soup and gotten bloated and soggy.
“Okay,” you finally accepted. “I’ll go talk to him.”
Unexpectedly, it was Jiyong that came to hug you goodbye. “If anything goes wrong, you’ll always be welcome here,” he whispered, and you nodded, hugging him back. Even though you were pretty sure it was just because they enjoyed the convenience of having pussy on tap, you were still touched, your eyes starting to sting with tears that you refused to shed. As accepting as they’d been of you, you’d tried your best to avoid appearing weak and needy, and that wasn’t about to change.
It didn’t take long for you to find Taehyung – he was standing right near the entrance of the convenience store, smoking a shame cigarette. It was a habit he’d picked up in the military and quit when he left, but when he was stressed or upset, he still craved it. Right now, he was all of that and more.
You watched from around the side of the small building as he blew smoke out and flicked the end of the cigarette with his thumb, causing the ash to fall into the ashtray on top of the bin. The cigarette smoke was all he could smell, so he didn’t know you were there.
“Taehyung-oppa?” you called hesitantly, taking a few steps forward.
The way he whipped around to look at you was almost comical. “Y/n…?” he breathed, like he could hardly believe it. Hastily, his free hand came up to wipe his cheeks. “What are you doing here?”
You came a little closer, still a little skittish. “You shouldn’t be smoking,” you said instead of answering.
He smiled a little sadly, looking down at the cigarette in his hand. “Well… probably not,” he agreed.
“It’s bad for your health,” you continued walking towards him as you chided him gently.
“It is,” he said, although his voice cracked on the second word. He closed his eyes and pressed his lips together, trying to stifle the sobs. If this was the last time he ever saw you, he didn’t want you to remember him as a sobbing mess. Dragging a deep, painful breath in through his lungs, he swallowed hard to compose himself.
“Taehyung-oppa…” When he next opened his eyes, you were standing right in front of him, in all your ethereal glory. Right now, it didn’t matter that you looked (and smelled) like you’d seen better days. He forced himself to drink in every feature, every bit of your essence and scent. If this was all he had for the rest of his life, it would be enough. When he’d adopted you, he made a promise that he would always take care of you. He’d failed once already, but if all he could do for you for the rest of his life was look out for you from afar, that would be enough.
The powers that be must be smiling down on him, though, because instead of disappearing, you plucked the cigarette from his hand and ground it out against the bin. “Let’s go home,” you said simply.
He didn’t know why or how you’d changed your mind, but he wasn’t about to look a gift horse in the mouth. Nodding mutely, he held out his hand, and miraculously, you placed yours in it, letting him lead you back to his car.
-----------------------------------------------
In the enclosed space of the car, Taehyung could pick apart all the unfamiliar notes of your scent, and it was driving him insane. The sour note of hunger and misery made the wolf in him want to whine and nose at your throat, bathe you and feed you and cuddle you until it all went away. The scent of unfamiliar men blanketing you inspired a very different reaction, though. It made him want to snarl, to tear the men who’d dared touch his mate apart, and make sure their scent was covered by his. He didn’t even want to think about how deep the scent of other men had sunk into you after three weeks. It had been his fault, anyway.
The part of him that was human tamped down ruthlessly on his baser, animalistic instincts, knowing that he couldn’t give in to them when they’d been engineered to manipulate him. Now, these instincts that had been bred into him were preventing him from being a good, responsible owner and that was unacceptable. Being here with you was throwing the conflict between his wolf and human sides into sharp relief, and he was silent as he mulled over it.
You didn’t have anything to say to him either, and your car ride home was quiet. You closed your eyes and leaned your head against the side of the car, and whenever there was a red light, Taehyung would gaze upon your face silently until he had to drive again.
When you finally got home, you followed Taehyung silently up to the apartment, your head bowed. His heart clenched at how broken and sad you looked, and the thought that he was the cause of it made him want to clutch you to his chest and cry. He did none of that, however, merely opening the door and letting you step into the house before him. You hovered uncertainly in the entryway, not even toeing off your shoes, your hands clutching the hem of your shirt in a way he recognized as an anxious habit of yours.
He stepped into the apartment and held his hand out to you. “Come on,” he coaxed, much like the first time he’d brought you home. The parallel didn’t seem like it was lost on you, because the ghost of a smile played across your lips, but this time when you put your hand in his, it was stiff and tense. He didn’t say anything, though, closing his larger hand around yours and drawing you into the apartment. You were still hesitant, though, looking around nervously, and in that moment, if he could have given up his heart to make you feel better, he would have done it without any thought.
“Do you want to go take a shower while I get dinner ready?” he asked quietly, and you nodded after a second, slipping off into your room to grab your clothes, then into the shower. When he heard the shower come on, he texted the boys to let them know he’d found you and they could call off the search. He didn’t add other details, not ready to share or even knowing what he should say to them, really.
With that done, he put his phone down on the counter, ignoring the way it vibrated over and over again, the boys undoubtedly bombarding him with questions. He figured you’d probably want a hot meal, and opened the fridge to see if he could cook anything. Seokjin would definitely be cooking up a storm for you and would load his car up with containers full of food tomorrow, but for tonight, he had to make do. There were a few threadbare ingredients that were left over from the last time you’d gone grocery shopping and he pulled them out hesitantly. It had honestly been too long since he’d cooked – when you were around, you usually took care of it and he’d been living off delivery food while you were gone.
Out of practice, he nevertheless gave it the good old college try, chopping up the onion and meat and attempting to make doenjang jjigae. He knew it was comforting for you, and it was for him too, especially after you’d made it for him during his heat. Unfortunately, when he tried to cook the stew, it turned into a mess somehow, with the onions burning and sticking to the pot, the doenjang starting to smoke, and the meat turning an unappetizing colour. Panicked, he started cursing while trying to scrape the food off the bottom of the pot.
The bathroom door swung open when you heard him, and you came out silently, nudging him aside to see what was happening. Without a word, you turned the stove off and started scraping burnt bits of food off the pan and into the bin. “Sorry,” Taehyung said, hovering awkwardly behind you. He’d never felt lower in his life. Could he do nothing right?
“It’s all right,” you murmured. “I’m not that hungry anyway. I might just turn in.”
His wolf whined in misery at the thought of you actually going to bed hungry, and he might have let a little noise slip, because your gaze snapped up towards him, before looking away. Your shirt was fisted in your hands again, and he forced himself to calm down. The fact that you were now afraid of him filled him with so much despair and hurt. He would genuinely throw himself off a bridge if it would make you smile again, just for a second.
“No, it’s okay, I’ll call delivery,” he said. He reached out to grab your hand, but thought better of it and snatched it back before making contact.
“Okay,” you agreed, your head still down. “Thank you, Taehyung-oppa.”
“Do you want to go sit down while I call them?” he asked, nodding towards the living room. You nodded and made your way to the couch where you perched on the very edge of the cushion, holding yourself stiffly with your hands in your lap.
Looking over sadly at you, he grabbed his phone and dialed the number for the restaurant that he knew was your favourite, ordering your food and his. He made sure to get additional side dishes, his wolf wanting nothing more than to provide for his mate.
When the food arrived, he busied himself taking it all out of the big basket and setting up the table as you drifted closer hesitantly. Even though he wasn’t looking directly at you, he watched carefully out of the corner of his eye as your lips turned up in a slight smile seeing your favourite black bean noodles, with sweet and sour pork on the side. It wasn’t much – before, you would have clapped your hands with glee and sit down eagerly – but to him, it felt like a victory anyway. Like maybe he could do this, take care of you and win back your affection.
You picked up your chopsticks and dug in, eating with a haste that he’d never seen before. You’d always been a bit of a slow eater, claiming you wanted to savour the food, but now you were wolfing it down like you didn’t know when you’d get to eat again, and it broke his heart all over again that you’d experienced hunger. You were his – his responsibility, his mate – and he’d failed you so miserably. The thought made his stomach flip unpleasantly and he found himself slowing down, losing his appetite at the thought of how much you’d undoubtedly suffered.
When you were done with your noodles – and most of the pork and side dishes – you started casting furtive glances over at his bowl of stew, and he pushed his bowl towards you without you having to ask. It was a striking reversal of the way you’d taken care of him during his pre-heat, and he was just now realizing how much responsibility you’d taken around the house since you came to live with him after his military service ended.
You hadn’t felt so full in weeks, and you sat back with a satisfied sigh when you’d drained Taehyung’s bowl as well. Your stomach hurt from how much you’d eaten, but it was a nice feeling, after the near-constant hunger pangs for the past three weeks. Moving sluggishly, you went to pack the empty bowls back into the bucket, but Taehyung stopped you. “I’ll do it,” he said. “Go get some rest, you look beat.”
Since you were exhausted, you didn’t argue with him, just getting up and heading to your bedroom. Taehyung watched, slightly wounded that you didn’t want to spend the night with him like you used to, but also not wanting to say or do anything to make you feel uncomfortable. “Good night,” he called, regretting it instantly when you leapt into the air at the sound of his voice.
“Good night,” you responded softly, and it was only his enhanced wolf hearing that allowed him to pick it up. Sighing, he finished cleaning up and put the basket back outside the door.
Being back in your bedroom felt almost surreal, after living on that streets and then in that tent. Everything was the same as it was before, when you were so different, it was like you didn’t fit in there anymore. The cute room with the cozy patterned bedspread, the overstuffed, oversized chair and reading nook… it was for another person, someone who didn’t exist anymore.
Still, you tried your best to block the thoughts out of your head as you pulled back the duvet to slide under it, fidgeting to try and get comfortable. Closing your eyes tight, you snuggled into the pillows, falling into the fitful, restless sleep that you’d gotten used to.
-----------------------------------------------------
Taehyung lay in the dark in his room, his eyes wide open. Having you in the next room over instead of in his bed next to him felt wrong, somehow, but even though he wanted nothing more than to slide into bed with you, or better yet, bring you to his room, his uncertainty and guilt kept him where he was.
He must have spent hours just lying there, listening to you toss and turn and whimper in your sleep, each sound twisting the knife. You’d always been such a deep, easy sleeper, knocking right out every night and sleeping peacefully till morning. It was his fault you’d changed, and he tortured himself all night imagining all the horrors you’d been through during the past few weeks.
When sunlight started shining through his curtains, he decided he’d had enough of lying there, and got out of bed. Still in his pajamas, he left his room and walked the small distance to yours to wake you up. Standing over your bed, he watched for a moment as you continued fussing in your sleep, a small frown etched into your features.
It had been a while since he’d done this, but years of waking you up meant that the muscle memory came back to him easy as he leaned over you and patted your side. “Hey… wake up,” he called softly.
You stirred and, clearly only half-awake, slurred, “Okay… you want a handjob?”
“I- what? Y/n…”
Your hand fought its way out of the covers and you held it out, palm up. “Come on…” you yawned.
“Y/n-ie… stop it.” Taehyung’s voice trembled as he saw the way you were holding your hand out, your fingers loosely curled. He put his hand in yours and placed it back onto the bed.
A little more awake now, you blinked the sleep from your eyes and squinted up at him. “Taehyung-oppa? Good morning,” you murmured in your soft, slightly scratchy morning voice. “Do you need breakfast?”
He hesitated. You looked so small and innocent in your bed now that he almost wondered if he’d hallucinated your earlier interaction. You continued looking at him, looking more alert, and he knew you were waiting for an answer.
“No,” he finally said. “Do you want to come to the studio with me today? We can grab some food on the way, and I’m sure the others are excited to see you too.”
You blinked and yawned again, before pushing yourself into a sitting position. “Okay,” you agreed. “Let me just get ready.” Sluggishly, you got out of bed, twisting your back to stretch while Taehyung made himself scarce, going to get dressed. When he was done, you ducked into the bathroom to do your thing, carrying your clothes in with you.
When you emerged, you looked fresh and adorable, in a simple white blouse and blue jeans, and anyone who wasn’t looking too closely or didn’t know you would have thought you were merely another pampered pet human. Taehyung, though, could see the way the clothes hung off you a little too loosely, the sharper edge of your jawline and cheekbones from weight loss, and most of all, could smell the scent of other men on you that even your shower last night hadn’t been able to get off.
“Is there anything you want for breakfast today?” he asked as you put your shoes on. He opened the front door and extended his other arm towards you, intending at first to usher you out with his hand on your lower back like he usually did, but he saw the way you stood a little more stiffly at the anticipation of his hands on you and dropped it awkwardly. He supposed he shouldn’t have been quite so surprised and hurt at your hesitance. If you wanted nothing more to do with him, it was still more than he deserved.
He took you to a little restaurant for porridge that was near the BigHit building, watching carefully as you downed the entire bowl in record-breaking time. Usually you were too busy chatting with him and telling him about your day, or random things you’d seen, or something you’d read in a book, but now you were silent, your head down as you shoveled food into your mouth. In an attempt to break the silence, Taehyung asked, “Did you sleep well?” even though he knew the answer to the question.
It didn’t work, anyway. You just looked up at him, wide-eyed, for a second, before nodding and returning to your food. Sighing in defeat, he lapsed into silence too. If this was the new normal, he couldn’t say he didn’t deserve it. At least you were eating well – it soothed his wolf slightly, to know that his mate was eating well.
When you were finished with your meal – even licking the spoon clean dramatically – he took you to the studio, where the boys, as anticipated, glomped you the moment you set foot in the door. Jimin was basically in tears as he hugged you and wouldn’t let go, even when the others came forth for their turn. Namjoon, however, hovered back, hesitant to greet you. In the heat of the moment, with Taehyung’s turmoil and misery in his face, it had been easy to justify his own role in the entire debacle, but now that he was looking straight at you, and seeing the toll that the past few weeks had taken on your body, the guilt sat uncomfortably in his chest.
Soon enough, you were back in your usual spot – on the couch, squished between Yoongi on one side and Jimin on the other, listening absently as they discussed their album and comeback with the managers and executives. Feeling warm and full from the porridge, your eyelids started to droop, and Yoongi, always alert and aware, gently took the book from your loose grasp and closed it, letting you rest your head on his shoulder.
Taehyung, watching from the adjacent couch, frowned, barely paying attention to what Bang PD was saying. He knew you hadn’t slept well last night, and the more rational side of him was relieved that you were at least getting some rest, even if you didn’t seem that comfortable. If he had his way, you would be lying down on a couch somewhere in a dark room where you could get some proper sleep. His wolf wanted to tear Yoongi to shreds, snarling in jealousy at the older man. It should be his shoulder you were currently drooling all over, your face adorably smushed into the fabric of his shirt.
Reminding himself harshly that you weren’t comfortable around him anymore, and really, whose fault was that, he forced himself to look away, although his jaw remained clenched, an outward sign of his irritation. He’d never been good at keeping his emotions to himself, but he figured he’d better damn well get good at it now, if he was going to keep all his problematic emotions to himself and avoid making you feel even more unsafe around him.
-------------------------------------------------
For almost a month, you and Taehyung danced around each other, trying to stay out of each other’s way. You didn’t want to do anything that might set him off again or remind him of why he’d kicked you out in the first place, and Taehyung was practically bending over backwards to give you the space he thought you needed to heal. As a result, the apartment was very quiet for most of the day, an oppressive silence that hung like a shroud over you.
Since you weren’t talking much to Taehyung, you were always happy to go with him to the studio, where the other boys were more than willing to entertain you. They’d realized quickly that you were a lot jumpier than before, which was understandable, so they tried not to do anything that would give you a fright. For the most part, you were all right with physical contact (other than with Taehyung, which upset him tremendously) but once in a while an innocent brush against you could remind you of the way Big Bang would touch you, and you’d leap into the air to get away from it.
It was Yoongi, who let you sit on the couch in his studio most days, who finally broached the topic after he tried to usher you into the studio with his hand on your back and you almost burst into tears. He sat you down on the couch and squatted in front of you, holding your hands and pleading for you to please tell him what was wrong for about half an hour before you caved and admitted that you might have some trauma from living on the streets. It was another twenty minutes of cajoling before you told him, in the smallest voice possible, that you’d had to use your body to survive.
“You… what?” Yoongi was so shocked by your confession that he lost his balance and fell, sitting ungracefully at your feet. Thinking he was reacting this way out of disgust, you covered your face with your hands and drew your shoulders in.
“I’m sorry,” you whispered, tears stinging at your eyes. This was exactly what you hadn’t wanted; you’d thought you’d been doing well with hiding everything and dealing with it alone. Now that Yoongi knew, the rest of the boys would know that you were filthy, disgusting… you couldn’t stop the sob from tearing out of your chest.
“Hey, hey, it’s okay,” he soothed, putting his shock and anger aside in the face of your clear distress. He wanted to flip a table, maybe set fire to something, but you were more important right now. His hands fluttered helplessly by your knees, wanting to comfort you but not sure how to. Your adverse reaction to the boys’ touch made so much sense now, and he didn’t want to accidentally trigger you again and upset you further.
In the end, he took your hand and placed it on top of his head, letting you stroke his soft, fluffy leopard ears. The rhythmic motion seemed to soothe you, and you smiled a little past the tears as you scratched the base of them, just like he let you do when you were a child. He didn’t want to force you to speak, but slowly coaxed everything out of you. Once you started talking about your experiences, it was like the words fell out of you, so relieved to finally be able to tell someone after keeping it to yourself for weeks as you tried to pretend like you were the same innocent human you’d been before being cast out.
Eventually, Yoongi managed to get you to fall asleep for a much-needed nap on his couch after you’d cried yourself out. His heart broke as he looked at you lying on the couch on your side, so small and delicate. You looked almost breakable, and the thought of you having to use that precious body to survive because of Taehyung made his fists clench by his side in rage. Turning down the lights so you would be able to rest properly, he left his studio, making sure to close the door quietly to avoid waking you up even though he wanted to slam it in his rage.
Taehyung was sitting in a meeting room with Jungkook and Jimin, and when Yoongi burst through the entrance, all of them looked up. “Suga-hyung, what’s up?” Jimin greeted.
Ignoring him, Yoongi stalked over to Taehyung, yanked him by the shirtfront out of his seat and decked him across the face. Shocked and unprepared for the hit, Taehyung sprawled on the floor, only to prop himself up by the elbow a second later, cradling his jaw with his hand and looking up at Yoongi with wide, hurt eyes.
“Suga-hyung, stop!” Jimin cried as Jungkook all but leapt across the table in the room to restrain the older man. The two bystanders exchanged panicked glances, not sure why Yoongi was suddenly attacking Taehyung. As irritable and snarky as the rapper was, it was almost impossible to get him truly angry, and he was clearly fuming right now.
Furious at the sudden attack, Taehyung surged up off the floor. “What the fuck was that for?!” he roared, pulling back to return Yoongi’s punch with one of his own. Jimin hurried over to pull Taehyung back before the situation descended into a brawl.
“You’re garbage,” Yoongi sneered. “Ask Y/n what it was for.” With that, he pulled himself out of Jungkook’s grasp, glared at Taehyung once more, and left the room, unable to stand being in the same room as him anymore.
“Shit, you’re bleeding,” Jimin fretted over his best friend, taking his chin in his hand and turning his face from one side to the other to see what the damage was. “Let’s get you cleaned up,” he instructed, tugging on Taehyung’s hand so the wolf hybrid had no choice but to trail after Jimin, his ears drooping.
“What do you think that was about?” Jimin asked in the bathroom as he wetted a wad of paper towels in the sink.
Taehyung, leaning against the wall beside the sinks, shrugged, meeting Jimin’s eyes in the mirror. “Hell if I know,” he grumbled, still bitter. “I can’t believe hyung would do something like that,” he sulked.
Starting to dab at the busted lip to clean it up, Jimin ignored Taehyung’s hiss of pain and subsequent whines. “You know hyung isn’t the type to do something like that out of the blue… we can go talk to him later, okay? Find out what’s wrong.”
Taehyung started to protest, but Jimin’s glare and the way he pressed a little harder on the split lip he was tending to made him subside, pouting.
Since Taehyung could be a big baby and Jimin had an obsessive need to take care of everyone around him, it took a while before Taehyung was deemed patched up enough to go talk to Yoongi. As he made his way down the hallway to Yoongi’s studio, he fumed silently about his hyung’s weird behavior.
By the time he got to the door of Yoongi’s studio, he’d worked himself back up into a rage, and pounded on the door loudly to announce his presence. “Hyung, open up!” he yelled.
The racket he was making woke you up abruptly, and you jolted awake, gasping as you shot up into a sitting position. A quick glance over at Yoongi told you that he hadn’t heard Taehyung at all, since he was still working, with his giant expensive noise-cancelling headphones on. Since he was occupied, you went to open the door yourself to let Taehyung in.
Taehyung’s arm was still up, poised to knock, when you opened the door. He stared at you with wide eyes, not having expected you and feeling slightly abashed now that you’d seen his childish tantrum. “Ah, Y/n-ie… I didn’t know you were here,” he greeted, dropping his arm to his side.
You, on the other hand, had a far more dramatic reaction. Seeing his split lip, you gasped in horror, and in your panic, the artificial distance you’d been imposing for the past month slipped away. “Tae-oppa!” you cried, your hands flying to his face. “What happened to you?” With the pads of your fingers, you stroked gently over the reddened skin around the cut, wincing.
Grabbing his wrist, you pulled him over to the couch and sat him down, continuing to fret over him. Taehyung, for his part, sat quietly and let you do what you wanted, just happy to have you near him again. All his anger evaporated as he smiled at you like a fool, ignoring the way it made his lip sting.
Yoongi, who’d turned around in his chair and slipped his headphones down around his neck, frowned at the sight that greeted him. You were kneeling on the couch next to Taehyung, leaning over him while he held your wrist in his hand, stroking gently along the soft skin on your inner wrist.
At the sound of Yoongi clearing his throat, you jumped, tearing your wrist out of Taehyung’s grasp, to look over at the rapper. The interruption was enough to startle you out of your frantic concern for him, and you sat down on the couch, your hands in your lap as you tried to make yourself smaller. “S-sorry,” you said to Taehyung, though it was directed at your hands. What would he think of you now? Getting all up in his personal space, even after he’d made it so clear that he didn’t want to be involved with you like that. You really needed to get a grip if you were going to remain his pet, you thought. No way in hell were you going back to being homeless.
“It’s all right,” Taehyung murmured, responding to you habitually. Now that you weren’t in his personal space anymore, though, his anger started coming back, and he trained his gaze on Yoongi, his jaw flexing with his irritation. Yoongi met his gaze with equal measure, neither of them backing down.
You were so consumed by your own thoughts that you didn’t realise the tension between them, asking Taehyung obliviously, “So what happened to your face, anyway?”
There was a beat of silence, then Yoongi replied smoothly, “He must have walked into a door.” As he said it, he pinned Taehyung with a warning gaze, as if daring him to disagree with his lie.
An awkward moment later, Taehyung agreed. “Yes… I was distracted,” he offered as an excuse.
Watching the way Yoongi looked at you, with a small frown knitting his brow, Taehyung remembered what Yoongi had said earlier, about asking you what the punch was for. He broke eye contact with Yoongi to look over at you instead, although you still refused to look up at him, preferring to focus instead on your lap, where your hands were folded politely.
“Anyway, Y/n-ie… I’m not needed for the rest of the day. Do you want to go home early?” Taehyung figured that whatever it was he was supposed to ask you about, it was probably best to do it in private. He didn’t have his own studio, so his apartment was the best bet.
“Sure,” you agreed immediately. You’d been doing that a lot lately, just going with whatever he wanted or suggested, unless you were protesting that he was spending too much time, money or effort on you. It was so completely different from the carefree girl who loved to go crazy with his credit cards and soaked up his affection that he’d known, and he hated himself again for causing you to withdraw like that. It had taken him so long to earn your trust back when you’d been a child and he adopted you, and now all of that was gone down the drain.
He stood up and you followed, trailing after him out of Yoongi’s studio with a smile and a wave that upset him all over again. He hadn’t had that cute, carefree smile directed at him for so long now, and again, he fucking knew it was his own fault, but that didn’t make it any easier. For now, he had to be satisfied with seeing that smile only when it was directed at other people. At least, he thought bitterly, he’d succeeded in providing a good support network for you.
When you got home, after yet another awkward car ride filled with stilted small talk, Taehyung sat you down on the couch, wanting to talk to you but unsure of how to bring it up. You looked at him inquiringly as he stuttered through several aborted attempts to start the conversation, stopping each time with a frown and a hum.
Finally, he managed to ask, in a tone he hoped was neutral, “Did you and Suga-hyung talk about anything interesting today?”
You visibly stiffened, and he wondered if it was his words or his failure to feign nonchalance. “Why do you ask?” you responded cautiously, and he could see your walls going up.
“Just something Suga-hyung said,” Taehyung waved his hand in the air.
You cursed Yoongi inwardly for selling you out, and so quickly, at that. “Uh, we just talked about some stuff that happened last month,” you said vaguely. Neither of you were necessarily comfortable talking about the time you’d spent on the streets, and you tried to tiptoe around it out of consideration for Taehyung, but he understood what you were trying to say anyway.
“Uh-huh, like what?” he prompted, undeterred.
Your shoulders hunched defensively around your ears. “I don’t want to talk about it,” you muttered, and started to get up to beat a hasty retreat to your room.
Taehyung reached out in a panic and grabbed your hand. “No, please, tell me what you told him,” he pleaded, looking up at you with that sad expression that you’d never been able to resist.
You sighed. “Why do you even want to know?” you asked, slumping back onto the couch in resignation.
Taehyung frowned. “Of course I want to know,” he countered immediately. “Why don’t you want to tell me?” he asked in concern now.
You shrugged. “I don’t like talking about it, and it’ll just upset you,” you explained in a small voice.
“Y/n…” Taehyung’s voice was filled with sadness. “Please, tell me about it.” He scooted slightly closer to you and took your hands in his.
“Taehyung-oppa…”
“I understand if you’re not ready to tell me,” he admitted. It stung to acknowledge the possibility that you were more comfortable talking to Yoongi about this than to Taehyung, when he’d always been your caretaker, the one you’d gone to for everything. “But if you’re willing to tell me, I really do want to know, so we can figure out the best way to help you.”
You swallowed. “All right,” you agreed hesitantly, then lapsed into silence as you thought about how you should explain what had happened. You didn’t want Taehyung to judge you, but then again, Yoongi hadn’t either, so maybe your fears about that had been overblown.
After a little more hemming and hawing as you tried to muster up the courage to talk about it, you finally said, “Do you remember the guys that I was living with?”
Taehyung nodded, slightly confused, but didn’t say anything, simply waiting for you to continue speaking when you were ready.
“Well, uh… they agreed to take me in and all, but it wasn’t for free,” you said, trying to skirt around the topic, hoping he would get it without you having to spell it out in so many words.
Of course, Taehyung just gave you a blank stare, as if waiting for you to finish your thought. You sighed. “They proposed, like, a trade,” you continued, willing him with your mind to just understand what you were trying to say already, damn it.
When his expression didn’t change, you gave up on hoping he would understand your hints. “I only had myself and didn’t have much to offer, so they, uh… theymademeusemybody,” you rushed out the last part of your sentence so softly it was almost like a whisper, but with Taehyung’s sharper hearing, courtesy of his hybrid senses, he picked it up perfectly.
Only, with what he’d heard, he wished he hadn’t. He stared at you imploringly, his ears folded down against his head, his eyes starting to fill with tears. “Wh-what?” His voice wobbled, unable to believe what he’d heard. You avoided his gaze by turning your face away, not wanting to see the expression on his face. You didn’t need his pity.
“Y/n…” Taehyung tightened his grasp on your hands. “I’m so sorry.” The emotion behind the simple words caught you off guard, and you turned back to look at him. He was staring straight at you, his eyes huge and filled with distress (and tears). A sob that he couldn’t quite hold back tore out of his chest and you watched, with some disbelief, as he completely broke down in front of you.
“Taehyung-oppa…” you murmured, trying to extricate one hand from his grasp. Panicked, he held on even tighter, unwilling to let you go and afraid that you would leave if he did. He was so upset it physically hurt all over. As an owner, he was distraught that his thoughtless actions had caused you to suffer like that. His baser instincts, however, prodded him to hunt down the humans who’d forced you into such a position. How dare they make such profane, disgusting, exploitative demands of you, his imprint, his mate?
And yet, wasn’t it all his fault? He was the one who’d kicked you out, so you had no other choice but to accept it. Everything that had happened to you while you were living on the streets had happened because of him, because he was a thoughtless, stupid, irresponsible, owner. It would serve him right if you left, although he couldn’t bear for you to. Clearly, he’d shown that he was an unfit owner.
He was so lost in his self-hatred that he didn’t realize how hard he was squeezing your hands which were folded in his bigger ones until you made a quiet noise of discomfort, flexing your hands in his grasp. Horrified, he let go of them as if scalded, appalled that he was hurting you yet again.
Instead of immediately taking off, however, you reached up to cradle the side of his face, wiping his tears away with your thumb. As much as you’d resented him, you couldn’t see his sadness without wanting to comfort him. It was somewhat strange – you’d always seen him as the rock, the constant in your life. Always there for you, always in your corner. That was gone now. You knew firsthand how he could be, how much you suffered because of him. Yet there were still those memories that, try as you might, you couldn’t stop holding close to your heart. Of being tucked into bed by him, spoilt rotten and cuddled during what had to be the most pampered adolescence possible. Part of you was vindictively pleased that he was so upset, since it was what he deserved, but there was another part that didn’t like seeing him suffer.
When he felt your hand on his face, Taehyung felt like he couldn’t breathe for a moment. It would have made more sense to him if you’d slapped or punched him, but this tender touch, after all you’d been through because of him… he didn’t deserve you. “I’m sorry, I’m so sorry,” he kept repeating like a mantra, as if saying the words could dispel the heavy guilt he felt.
Because you weren’t a saint after all, you couldn’t resist twisting the knife. You knew you should appreciate how apologetic he was now that he knew what had happened, but there was also a spark of irritation within you. Why did he get to cry and make a fuss, when you couldn’t? You were comforting him when all the things he was upset about had happened to you, because of him.
“If you were sorry,” you said quietly, “you wouldn’t have kicked me out to begin with.” There was no malice in your tone, which was quiet and neutral, but it was abundant in your words. This was all his doing, and he shouldn’t get to wail dramatically about it like he was the victim.
Taehyung swallowed. “You’re right,” he acknowledged immediately. “This is all my fault, I’m sorry. Tell me what I can do to make it better for you,” he implored, his wide, tear-filled eyes looking at you earnestly.
“Tell me why you did it.” You never raised your voice, staying unmoved in the face of his clear anguish.
“Okay,” he agreed instantly, almost before the last word left your mouth. “Okay, I’ll tell you, just please… don’t leave.”
You folded your hands neatly in your lap and prepared to listen. To be honest, you’d thought you would be able to predict whatever he was going to say. He was furious about you coercing him into a sexual relationship when he wasn’t in his right frame of mind, he would confess, and after thinking about it, he’d gotten so angry that he acted impulsively. You could almost hear the words inside your head already – they were the same reasons you’d been repeating to yourself, over and over again.
“I was mad,” Taehyung admitted, the words leaving a bad taste in his mouth, “And I acted rashly.” He hadn’t wanted to tell you about the imprint, hoping that he could deal with it by himself so he wouldn’t give you yet another thing to worry and stress over, but you’d asked, and he couldn’t reject your request. Not when he knew how much you’d suffered because of him. You nodded, like you’d expected him to say that.
What he said next, however, took you completely by surprise.
“Namjoon-hyung told me…” he stopped to swallow and gather himself, then started again. “I know you think that during my last heat –” you both flushed, thinking about what had happened then – “that was new, but it wasn’t.”
Your gaze sharpened and focused on him, listening more carefully to what he had to say now. “I’d been struggling since my discharge from the military,” he continued. Damn, this was hard to say. “Namjoon-hyung helped me look into it, and he found…”
He paused to muster some courage, running his hand over the back of his neck awkwardly. “He found what?” you prompted, leaning forward curiously. You hadn’t voluntarily come this close to him for a month, he noted. His wolf preened.
“Uh, he found evidence of… hybrid technology that he believes is the cause. He called it,” he coughed to delay it a little longer, “an imprint. It’s a genetic quirk that was created in predator hybrids to ensure that they could bond with their human owners.”
You blinked. “I’m not your owner,” you said dumbly. It was so much to take in, that bit was the only thing your mind could focus on and grasp.
“I know,” he nodded, “but because we spent so much time together in our adolescence the bond had a chance to form, and after spending two years apart, it kicked in because you’d reached…” He grimaced, not really wanting to say it, and waved his hand at you vaguely instead.
You understood well enough what he was trying to say and blanched. “Gross…” you muttered under your breath, but Taehyung heard it and his shoulders slumped further. Of course you were horrified and disgusted at him – you should be. For the first time, he wondered if you would have been better off on the streets – at least then you wouldn’t have to deal with him and this genetic abnormality. He’d forced you into every difficult situation you’d faced since coming back to him after his military service, and it was only natural that you were appalled by his revelation.
“I’m sorry,” he said again. He was saying that a lot, but no matter how many times he uttered the words, they were never enough to convey the depth of his remorse and sorrow over what he’d done to you. “I’m sorry, I’m so sorry…” his head fell into your lap as he cried.
You started stroking his head and ears, the habit you’d developed from years of being around him making you move your hand automatically to soothe him as you tried to sort out your thoughts. Hybrid technology… a genetic quirk… that meant humans had been responsible for what Taehyung was going through. You were more educated than most humans, which meant you understood very well the history between humans and hybrids. Humans had created hybrids and enslaved them, treating them as chattel – pets, workhorses, you name it.
And now, you were continuing to be the source of a hybrid’s pain and suffering. Had humans not done enough? Their destructive legacy continued to live on in the bodies of the hybrids they’d created, and while Taehyung had been struggling with it by himself, you’d been living in blissful ignorance, resenting him for what he’d done.
Taehyung cried until the tears wouldn’t come anymore, then he just lay with his head in your lap, the occasional hiccup making him jerk slightly. After a while, you turned your head to look out the window – the sun was setting, you noted.
“Taehyung-oppa…” you called softly, shaking his shoulder gently to wake him up. “You should get to bed.”
He stirred slightly, then tried to go back to sleep, but you pushed him back into a sitting position. “Come on, Tae-oppa,” you said, standing up and tugging on his hand. He followed you as you led him to his room, but wouldn’t let go of your hand once you’d gotten him settled in bed.
“Will you stay with me tonight?” he croaked.
You eyed him dubiously for a second, not sure if it was a good idea, especially in light of what you’d just learned. But with his sad expression, the dejected slump of his shoulders and the way his ears flopped over his head, you couldn’t say no to anything he asked. Especially not with the newfound guilt you were carrying around.
“Okay,” you acquiesced. “Just let me wash up and I’ll come back.”
When you tiptoed back into Taehyung’s room, scrubbed down and in your pajamas, you thought he was asleep from the way he was curled up under the sheets. You quietly pulled back the covers on your side of the bed and got in slowly, trying not to jostle him awake, but it didn’t seem to make a difference, since the moment you were settled into the mattress he squirmed closer to you, wrapping his arms and legs around you and pressing his face into your neck.
With a small sigh, you settled into his hold.
---------------------------------------------
“Y/n… I don’t understand.” Namjoon’s brow was furrowed as he looked up at you, standing in his studio.
“Namjoon-oppa… I know you know about the imprint, and you told Taehyung-oppa about it,” you told him.
“Right… but I don’t know why you’re asking me this.”
“It’s not complicated – I just want to know if there’s a way to break the imprint.”
Namjoon hesitated. It was something he’d been looking into nonstop as well, hoping to find something that would set both you and Taehyung free. It didn’t seem to be possible, though – the genetic bond was not designed to be broken, especially since hybrids had been considered so disposable. If anything went wrong, euthanasia of hybrids had been just as commonly accepted as euthanasia of regular pets.
“There isn’t,” he admitted. “The only cases where a hybrid was able to move on from the imprint…” he gulped, not sure whether he should tell you.
“What is it?” you asked impatiently. “Namjoon-oppa, please. I’m trying to help Taehyung-oppa, just like you are,” you pleaded. “Why won’t you tell me?”
“Stop asking!” Backed into a corner now, he snarled at you, his ears pressed back against his head. “There’s nothing you can do, okay? Just drop it.”
“Namjoon-oppa, please. I don’t know why you’re trying to hide it. I’ll do anything it takes to help Taehyung-oppa break his imprint.”
That got his attention. “Anything?” This was crazy… it was way too much to ask of you.
“Anything,” you confirmed resolutely. He could see your determination in the set of your jaw and the way your gaze met his unwaveringly.
“Fine,” he sighed. “Ah, this is crazy…” he muttered to himself, shaking his head.
“The only recorded cases where a hybrid was able to move on from an imprint… is when the object of the imprint passed away.”

Smell of Plum Blossom Tea Ch 15
Summary: Just like a butterfly wing, a single act of kindness can change the course of the future, it certainly did for MK as a black furred monkey put out a hand towards him
Rating: Teen and up
Chapter 15: Plotting Revenge is a Good Bonding Activity
“And then you showed up and, well you know the rest,” Red Son exhaled as the three of them sat down on the swings at the park. It had taken a week before he eventually had the courage, and while making sure his father was rested, to face his friends once more.
“So you're the one who took the skeleton key,” MK said.
“Yeah,” the prince nodded and braced himself for the accusations.
“Oh thank god, I really thought I lost it on accident,” MK sighed in relief as he sagged on the swings.
“Still kinda lost it,” she pointed out.
“But at least it wasn’t through me just forgetting it somewhere!” He pumped his fists in the air, promptly forgetting he was on a swing and was now flailing his arms trying to not fall off.
“…okay you're both taking this a little too easily,” the prince deadpanned as he stopped himself from tugging on his hair, “why aren’t you both mad at me?”
“For?” They both turned to him with a raised eyebrow.
“For? For?!? I stole from you and didn’t say a word until everything blew up in all of our faces and had a crisis that almost destroyed the city-AGAIN!” He had to jump off the swing as he paced in front of them. “Why aren’t you both pissed off at me?!”
“Well for one, the key was cool and all, but it didn’t have, like, any real sentimental value,” MK shrugged, “I mean I had it for like a day.”
“Two, it just opens locks, which is pretty bad with certain things like banks and homes, but at least it’s not a weapon of mass destruction,” Mei finger gunned him.
“And three, most importantly, it’s you,” MK finished.
Red Son looked at him with the most dumbfounded look.
“What is that supposed to mean?”
“Well you like to call yourself a villain, but I have never actually seen you do any hardcore villainy stuff,” he pointed out.
“I once saw you make fire animals to a group of children because they complimented you on your flame head,” she grinned.
“They have good taste,” he averted his eyes away from the both of them as a small flush appeared on his cheeks.
“But my point is,” MK stepped off the swing and put a hand on his shoulder, “you have been with us to know long enough that what you say isn’t what you do. You have a very soft and squishy heart underneath all those flames.”
“No! I do not!” He instantly denied, ignoring how his face brightened.
“Yes you do,” both humans said as MK confined, “and I like to think that while it has only been a few months, I know you wouldn’t steal something of ours unless you were forced to.”
Red Son said nothing as he clenched his fists, but that was all the confirmation that the two needed.
“Exactly my point, so I was hurt at first, but it turned out alright in the end, so don’t be too upset about it okay. I have already forgiven you,” he gave a big hug to the demon.
“It’s in the past nightlight, all is already good between us,” Mei joined in on the hug and grinned, “but I wouldn’t mind some ice cream after this.”
The demon Prince froze in their warm embrace as he slowly relaxed and lifted both his arms around his friends. “We’re going to the good one, not the rip off that tries to scam up for a mint chocolate chip, only for it to be vanilla and fucking peppermint candy inside.”
“Agreed,” both humans instantly said, that was the most disappointing I’ve cream joint they have ever been to and they saw ones where they can even mess up vanilla ice cream.
“We so need to catch up,” Mei said as she laid her head on Red shoulder, “there have been so much that you missed, and learning that the Monkey King and pops have a thing for each other is a whole nother ball game that needs to be discussed.”
“I’m sorry WHAT?!” He held them both out as his hair slightly flicker in shock at that abrupt news.
“Ohh boy,” MK sighed as he slumped down. “I need some mind numbing ice cream before we even go into this.”
“Ice cream,” Mei echoed.
“…fucking ice cream,” the demon eye twitched. This was going to be one hell of a conversation.
“They like each other?!” He slammed his spoon down.
“Not so loud,” MK groaned as he put his head to the table.
“But yeah,” Mei continued with a spoon in her mouth, “they have a total thing for each and the real kicker is that both sides are dense enough to not realize that.”
“Your fucking with me,” he deadpans.
“There is no fucks to be seen.”
“Unless they do it with each other.”
“Mei!/Why’d you put that image in my head,” Red yelled as MK groaned.
“What?” She shrugged her shoulders. “I’m just saying, besides I still don’t like the half priced knock off Monkey god trying to hook up with pops,” she narrowed her eyes.
“Oh,” the prince was a bit surprised by this, “I thought you idolized him, what changed?”
“Well first, never really idolized him, that’s all on MK.”
“I feel no shame,” he crossed his arms.
“Got really disillusioned by him with all of Makkie’s stories. And secondly, I hands down don’t believe that the great almighty Monkey King is good enough for him,” she bluntly stated.
“I mean you're not wrong, but explain,” the bull demon leaned in. He has known the Six Eared Macaque for a very long time, the monkey healer has taught and shown him many things throughout their lives, and has saved it just as many, if not more. So it’s needless to say that he sees the monkey as an uncle for a very long time.
“I mean other than fighting pops and almost trying to kill him over his fuck up-”
“WHAT!/He wasn’t trying to kill him!”
“He can’t just expect to walk in and pretend everything is all fine and good between them after he made pops blind and severed their friendship for five hundred years. Pops had mourned for him and self deprecated himself during his bad days, he feels the guilt and shame that had overcome him and he emotionally understood his wrongdoings but has been trying-no he has turned over a new leaf. He had changed and has learned better from the immature monkey he once was, but the same can’t be said for the Monkey King. Cause instead of talking about it, what does he do? He fucking yells and attacks him!” She slammed her fist on the table. “He attacked him and when MK stepped in between the two, which is still so very fucking stupid by the way.”
“You did what?” Red looked towards the sheepish human.
“I had to stop them somehow!”
“Not with your life!”
“Well, now I know for next time.”
“There better not be a next time!”
“It was still MK who had to stop the dumbass from fighting,” Mei growled out. “And he still had the audacity to question pops about trying to use MK like the fuck?! Who the fuck does he think he is to think that he has any parental right over him other than Pops. None! Zilch! Fucking zero! He has nothing except that pretty little staff that MK somehow is able to lift, which by the way we really need to figure out how that is possible.”
“Oh believe me, I’ve been trying so hard to figure that part out as well,” MK sighed.
“But my point to all of this is, I know he is a good monkey, him saving the city and mentoring MK and all that, but he is absolute garbage when it comes to actually acknowledging the fact that things don’t stay the same, everything has changed.” She let out a huff and proceeded to finish her melting ice cream.
“Wow…you really have thought about this,” the demon said as he watched her.
“Well I had some time to think and I still stand by Monkey King not being good enough for pops.”
“No one is good enough for dad,” MK muttered, making his two friends a bit surprised.
“I’m a bit shocked, I would have thought you would have been all for letting the Monkey King and Macaque court each other,” he tilted his head. “Why the change of heart?”
“No change, it’s just that-well” he began to fiddle with the ends of his violet headband, “I know the Monkey King and I know he is an amazing mentor, always includes me when the tribe comes around, loves to feed me, and he is just a good person. I grew up on the stories about him and what he has accomplished. I can’t help but idolize him and want to stay by his side through thick and thin. It’s just that-that…” he trailed off and hesitated with his next words.
“But not as much as pops,” Mei saw what he was getting at.
“…yeah, not as much as pops. As much as that seems mean, he has been with me for so long that I can’t imagine my life without him…Have I ever told you guys how I met dad?” He suddenly said as both human and demon shook their heads.
“All I know is that he found you in an alley one day and you’ve been with him since then,” the pigtail girl stated. “But I have a feeling there’s a lot more to it than that.”
“Yes and no,” MK pushed away his bowl, “he did find me in an alley and took me in for the night, fed me, treated my injuries, and comforted me, but that was supposed to be my only stay there.”
“So what changed?” Red softly asked.
“My former parents weren’t good people,” he breathed out. It took a long time before he could finally admit to himself that his sperm donors were selfish, good for nothing, assholes that only cared about two things, their nonexistent reputation and money. That night might have set a world record on how long he hugged his pops as he just wouldn’t let go even when the morning came.
Both human and demon knew exactly what he meant without any unneeded details as both their eyes glowed an ominous scarlet and viridian.
“Where are they?” The Bull and Dragon successor echoed as a small burst of energy flickered off them.
‘Should really be glad that today is a Monday and no one is around,’ MK winced as he took a glance around outdoors. “Guys, calm down. I’m fine, it’s been over ten years since I last saw them and I doubt I will ever see them again.”
The two begrudgingly settled down like a petulant child and slouched in their seats.
“Look dork, all I need is an address and I can promise you that I can make their lives a living hell,” Mei leaned in with a malicious smile. “They will regret even wanting to breathe by the time I’m done with them.”
“A name would suffice as well, it’s always prudent to know who the enemy might be in case there are no longer using the same location,” Red added as well.
“I am not giving you a name nor an address,” he sternly told them, “It’s been a long time since I saw them and I haven’t thought about them since,” which may be a teensy lie as they do pop up from time to time in his head during his not so good days, but it’s best not to tell them that.
“Besides, while I don’t exactly remember what happened that night I last saw them, I do know that they were terrified of Dad, whatever he said to them thoroughly shook them to their core.” He let a bit of vicious delight show on his face, he may not be a cruel person, but even he will happily admit that it was a bit cathartic to think back on that night and watch the emotional journey they went through that night as the life drain out their face the longer Dad spoke to them. It’s a bit messed up yes, but can you really blame him, he had to put up with their shit.
“Like he would do anything less for his child,” Mei smirked, “I guess I’ll let them off this time.”
“Good,” MK smiled as he got up to throw away all of their trash.
“We’re so getting it off of Mac,” Mei whispered to Red.
“Undoubtedly,” he subtly nodded, “they will feel pain.”
“When I’m done with them not even the morticians would want to come near them,” both shared a devilish smile, but quickly widened it when MK came back.
“Anyways,” he sat down with a huff, “before I got into all of that, what I was trying to say is that yes I respect the Monkey King, but I will always hold Dad to my heart first before anyone else.”
“Hear hear,” she pointed in the air, “so, does that mean you don’t want the great and powerful Monkey King to date pops.”
“Not really,” he winced at how bad that sounded. “I mean don’t get me wrong, but they just got back to being friends and I don’t think that it would be a good idea to jump into any type of romantic relationship so soon.”
“Sounds like an excuse but I don’t care, preach it!” She laughed and threw a fist in the air.
“It’s not an excuse,” well maybe a little, “it’s just that Dad said that he swore off dating for a long time after his last partner.”
“By the gods, we don’t talk about his previous partners, especially lemur bitch,” Red groaned as he knocked his head on the table, hoping that this would be the blow that would finally free his mind of those atrocious memories.
“Yeah I’ve been hearing that a lot, but what exactly did he do?!” Mei turned to look at the groaning prince.
“You really don’t want to know.”
“Heard that a lot as well and I still say, yes I really do,” the monkey successor added.
“I’m not-”
“Pleassseee!” Both humans begged with a puppy dog look in their eyes.
“All I’m willing to say is do not eat anything that he gives you and don’t show signs of high intelligence,” he pushed their faces back.
“Well I don’t have to worry about the second one,” MK grinned.
“Same!” Mei high fived him.
Red Son just looked at the two humans, one who was trying to earn his doctoral degree in Medicine and the other who almost finished with her bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering. He blinked once, then twice, opened his mouth, then promptly closed it and instead pinched his nose.
“But about that first thing,” Mei turned her attention back to the demon, “is his cooking really that bad or is there a little extra something he puts in there.”
“The second one, I don’t know exactly what happened, and I thank everyone for that, but I do know that Macaque was unconscious for a few days and when he awoke he felt an underlying desire to grovel at Shun’s feet and adore him and only him.”
“He made a love potion?!”
“More like a love poison,” he shuddered. While he had never ingested one before, there have been times where he was sent food laced with these poisons. Luckily he had never taken a bite of it before, but the first time it had happened, he swore that he had never seen both his parents so furious before. “They make the user attracted to the designated target and they will forever obey their every whim and command while under this spell, or at least until the spell wears off. The more potent and permanent ones have either been destroyed or kept under a watchful eye of a higher deity or demon.”
“That sounds fucking horrible,” MK grimaced.
“Yeah, like a 50/10 of no fucking thank you,” Mei scrunched up her nose.
“Exactly, so this is one of the reasons why Macaque decided best to get the fuck out of that and break up with him.”
“One of the reasons?”
“One of the reasons,” Red didn’t exactly know how to tell him that Shun had an unhealthy obsession with the simian, always stalking him, getting overly possessive, and those were just the blatant things. Yeah, it’s best to just let it be and forget that creepy ass fucker, it’s not like he’ll ever show his face again after his beat down courtesy of Macaque.
“And that just further emphasized my point!” The teen said, “he wants nothing to do with a romantic relationship of any kind, so he and Monkey King getting together would just be bad all around.”
“And I totally agree, so if Monkey ass tries to hurt Pops at any time, I already have Operation Sticky Surprise all bundled up and ready to go,” the dragon successor gave an evil looking grin.
“Sticky Surprise?”
“Mei has been making plans on plans on how to make the Monkey King life a living hell aside from outright killing him,” MK deadpanned.
“Killing is boring, humiliation is a lot more fun and it comes with the added bonus of there being so many different ways to do it! I also have Operation Inkblot, Stink Butt, Bug Devastation, Hangman Riot, Gossip Thrill, Paranoia Pandemonium, Faeries Laughters-”
“You got the Faeries involved in this?” Both boys looked horrified. “Why?!”
“I asked and they were more than happy to agree. In fact, I got a lot more creatures to help me out as well, I have an entire file just for the forest!” She eagerly held out her phone and showed them the numerous folders in the file that was labeled ‘Dragon Revenge: Forest Edition.’ “Want to hear about it?”
“…yes,” he leaned in closer. He had to admit that he is morbidly curious on what exactly some of the plans may entail.
“Well, I have Operation Ní Chorus, Qilin Stampede, BaBa Appetite, Macaque Monkeys Mania, Kappa War, and so much more. I even have another file that contains the one Daiyu and the rest of them made.”
“Even Ahmed?”
“Even Ahmed,” MK nodded. He should know as he was there that day when they were coming up with all of these elaborate plans. He felt he shouldn’t have been so surprised when the lion demon came up with some gruesome one, involving a bag of blood and some nasty curses, but that has nothing on Minsheng and their ideas. Who knew glitter can be used that way.
“You're just trying to humiliate him and possibly injure him in the process?” The demon asked.
“He’s an immortal monkey that has been through a lot of shit, he can take whatever we throw at him,” she bluntly stated.
“Have you thought of using a vast amount of flour then igniting it? I know from experience that using the two would make an unexpected explosion,” the first time he cooked he burned down the whole kitchen while holding the bag of flour in his hands.
“No, I did not,” Mei raised her phone and opened a new document, “tell me more.”
“Nail polish is another flammable object, which is why I have never worn it until you forced it upon me, powdered sugar, Ping Pong balls, oranges-”
“Why do you know this,” MK asked with a bit of horror in his tone.
“Well after I set my Pomelo on fire inside a safe house that we don’t use often, I decided it would be best to look up what else in a regular home is fucking flammable and not so surprising, a lot of things are. But on the upside,” he matched Mei’s sinister grin, “it’s not common knowledge and I don’t think the impulsive Monkey King would look up something like this if you know what I mean.”
“Oh I know exactly what you’re getting at,” she grinned even wider, “it would be a damn shame if someone were to perhaps spill some sugar on him, and there just happens to be a flame.”
“Or maybe if someone wanted to try something daring with a Ping Pong ball only to ‘accidentally’ hit it in the wrong direction,” he ominously said.
“Oh that would be bad.”
“Very bad.”
“Annoyingly bad,” Mei leaned in, “Tell me more.”
“With pleasure.”
“I feel like I should stop them,” he pondered to himself as he watched his two friends plot his mentor not-demise. “…nahh, I’m sure it will be fine.”
“We can dump sodium medals in the water to really make an explosion!”
“Yeah I’m good,” MK deadpanned as he leaned back, “Monkey King can handle it himself.”
“What are you bozos doing here,” Mei huffed as she saw Yin and Gin at the arcade.
“We may be elite demons with awesome powers and the everlasting hunger for a worthy fight,” Jin dramatically said.
“But even we can get bored sometimes and MK mentioned this place before,” Yin finished as he concentrated on shooting the zombies. “Speaking of, where is he? I usually see the two of you together.”
“I will mention the creepy stalking if I didn’t do that myself,” she muttered, “but couldn’t make it, he’s currently doing his online courses right now.”
“Oh right he did mention something about wanting to be a…healer I think was the word.”
“No dumbass, he is trying to be a physician. Healer is so Ming Dynasty bro,” Jin corrected his blue twin.
“Hey I’m the social one, you're the one who has their nose all up in the books,” he shrugged then pumped his fist in the air. “Hell yeah, new level!”
“I’m still pissed off at the both of you for the stunt you did at the race track,” she said as she leaned on the racing game next to theirs.
“To be fair, we knew we wouldn’t win,” the orange demon said.
“Yeah, it was mostly for fun.”
“Well that ‘fun’ almost cost me the medal and you really pissed off a lot of racers that day,” she stretched and hopped onto the bike. “Side note, if you ever meet a girl with purple hair, bright green eyes, and utterly jacked, you might want to scram. She was one of the competitors and she’s the least bit happy with either one of you.”
“Is that so?” Jin hummed as he hopped on the bike next to her.
“Yeah she wants to use your corpses as a gaudy rug for her front porch.”
“It be like that sometimes,” both twins said.
“You both seem way too chill about that,” she raised her eyebrow.
“We have seen people, demons, deities, and creatures alike much scarier,” Yin started as he continued to shoot the zombies down.
“We had masters who threaten to crush our bones, people using scrolls to torture our minds, deities making us relieve the worst days of our life over and over, demons stabbing us in the heart over and over, and the sheer presence of Macaque bearing down on the both of us,” Jin casually said.
Mei blinked a few times, “Okay that seems like a lot, but understandable. You met pops before?”
“You know the Six Eared Macaque,” the blue demon turned his head to her, “of course you do, cause why not.”
“We met him a few times after the whole Calabash incident and he is much scarier than the rumors made him out to be.”
“But demon knows how to put on a good play.”
“Yeah, his shadow play is a real banger,” Jin gave a toothy grin.
“So you guys met him at the theater,” she deadpanned.
“Yup,” both said.
“Why am I not surprised,” she sighed and began the game, “well I’m gonna smoke your ass on this.”
“I’d like to see you try,” Jin grinned as he revved his engine.
“Children, both of them,” Yin rolled his eyes, but he gave a loud shout as he noticed he finished the level. “Hell Yeah! That’s what I’m talking about!”
“I refuse to believe that you managed to make peaches taste sour,” Wukong scrunched up his nose as he disdainfully eyed the peach dried chips. “This has to be some mockery or imitation, cause ain’t no way in hell are those actual peaches.”
“Hate to break it to ya,” Mac smirked as he took a chip in his mouth, “but they are.”
“You heathen,” he hissed out.
“Payback for the tainted Mango,” he smirked.
“Oh come on! That was centuries ago!”
“And I hated every last bite of that disgusting piece of fruit that dared touch my tongue!” He barked back.
The sage threw up his arms and marched to the kitchen, “I am raiding your kitchen! I need to wash put that nasty taste and hope that it doesn’t taste like a cup of lemon juice has just been freshly squeezed into my mouth.”
“You big baby, it’s not even that sour,” he snorted as he took another handful of chips. He knew that Wukong hated the taste of anything sour, revenge never tasted so good.
“No, no, no, why do you even have this,” he asked as he held up a bottle of Olive juice.
“Blame MK, last time he brought home an Aloe Vera milk which I didn’t realize was even a thing,” and the sad thing was that it didn’t taste bad, just extremely weird.
“Course he did,” was all he said as he continued to scrimmage through the kitchen. “Aha! Here we…go?” He paused as he moved over the soda and spotted a large jug. “What are you?” He opened it up and the familiar smell hit his nose as he never forgets that smell. “You mangy monkey!”
“Hmm?” Mac raised his brow as Wukong leaped over him with a familiar jar in hand, “No, you are not about to drink wine right now. I can’t deal with your alcohol self, you are too fucking clingy and a hundred times more impulsive.”
“I won’t, but how did you manage to sneak this away,” he grinned and swished the half full jug in hand.
“Huh? What are you babbling on about?”
“How did you get the Immortality wine, I know they have it locked up nice and tight after my little fiasco,” he held it up for further emphasis.
“The what wine?!” He stalked over to him and snatched the jug out of his hands, “Is that what this is?!”
“You drank it without even knowing what it is?” He shot the black simian an incredulous look, he knows that he is the one who is the most suspicious of getting anything from anyone, let alone something he doesn’t know.
“Don’t look at me like that!” He barked, “It’s from a friend who stops by once and a while. When-how-what the fuck Shen?”
“You know someone who can just give you immortality wine,” he couldn’t help but find a bit of amusement from his friend's expression.
“Apparently, he comes by every once in a while and that fucker never told me what this shit is,” he growled that last part.
“How do you know him?”
“He was a friend of Ping!” He threw his hands in the air and marched back to the kitchen and put back the jug of very rare and sought after wine…on second thought it would probably be better if he found a better spot to put this.
“Ping? The same Ping who taught you medicine and helped grow the forest Ping,” he stated as his tail swished behind him. He really wanted to just shake him and ask what the human was to him, but (for once) he kept down his impulsive thoughts and gently prodded him.
“Yess,” he rubbed his neck out of a bout of nerves, “but technically I made the forest, he said it would be a good way to plant a seed and take care of it to vent my frustration. Which is weird, but oh well and the next thing I know there is a forest.”
“So you just forgot that seeds grow and made an entire ass forest without you even noticing,” Wukong smirked.
“I’m not that fucking blind that I didn’t see an entire damn forest, it just didn’t…occur to me that I made it,” he winced at how dumb that sounded. He rolled his eyes when he heard the first snort then a full blown laughter coming from the brown furred monkey. “Yeah yeah, laugh it up.
“Don’t worry,” he said in between breaths, “I will! Pffftttt! HAHAHAHAHAHA!”
He gave a petulant huff and went back to his warm tea with a laughing monkey following close behind. Eventually, the laughter subsided and all that was left was a smirking monkey leaning on a simian dead set on ignoring him.
“Only you moonshine,” he smirked as he watched his friend turn his face away with a faint red blush. He knows that calling him cutesy nicknames doesn’t get on his nerves no matter how many times he says so, but he secretly likes them. It’s how he got away with some of the things he did, but now he has a new goal in mind as he casually stretched his arms behind Mac and gently let his fingers rest on his long fur.
‘Soft. So soft. I don’t think I ever felt his fur ever be this soft before,’ he eyed the tantalizing fur curled in between his fingers. Just taunting him and begging him to please thread your fingers throughout the fluffy locks. ‘I really want to groom his fur,’ his hands twitched as he watched to see if Macaque would stop him, but he saw his eyes closed and leaning back. He almost let out a purr at the sight of his friend's trust and really wanted to just put his whole body on him for cuddles, but managed to keep it down in time and instead readied himself to put his other hand to his fur, a door slamming open stopped him.
BOOM!
“Guess who's back and is hearing an obnoxious ringing noise in their ears!” A loud voice shouted out which made the two separate from each other, much to the ire of a brown furred simian.
“Who the-” he began to mutter.
“And what have I told you about keeping your voice down inside?” Macaque yelled back.
“Too many times to count,” Bohai sighed.
Minsheng chuckled as they walked in and noticed that his friend wasn’t quite alone. “Well what do we have here?”
“Hey there, you might know me, I’m the-” he was cut off by the lion demon.
“The Monkey King, I have seen images of you before,” Ahmed then gave a slight nod, “I’m Ahmed, it’s a pleasure to meet you.”
“Right back at you.”
“The name is Daiyu chimp,” she gave a very harsh slap on his shoulder and sat on the edge of the couch.
“I mean not really a chimp-”
“I’m Bohai,” the jellyfish demon said with a glow, “we’ve heard many things about you.”
“What kind? I mean there are a lot of stories-” he was cut off once more.
“And I’m Minsheng,” they said as he sat in between the two monkeys, “and I would introduce you to Yanyu, but she’s at work right now.”
“Yanyu?”
“His student,” Bohai commented as he watched the monkey demon sit the vulture down and is currently examining her ears.
“You had a student?”
“What can I say, I have that charm,” he deadpanned then shot Daiyu a glare, “how many times have I told you not to fuck with strange magical plants unless you know what it is!”
“Again, too many times to count,” the jellyfish reiterated.
“She heard the rumors about him and just went to the forest and forced him to teach her. But secretly, we all know Mac attack has a soft spot for the kiddos,” the bunny grinned as he saw that Mac was now purposefully tuning them out.
“Yeah, I can tell,” he gave a sweet smile as he remembered all his interactions with both of his children.
All the demons not preoccupied silently blinked at Wukong’s words and expressions and it was all at once did it click for them. And they all shared a knowing look to one another.
“It’s nothing too bad,” Macaque concluded after he checked both her ears, medians, and body. “You should be fine after some rest and water, which you will do even if I have to strap you down to that damn bed.”
“You got it doc!” She saluted him and walked off.
He rolled her eyes at her antics and didn’t even flinch when Ahmed sat down beside him. “Please don’t tell me you got injured in some way as well.”
“Don’t worry, I did not,” he gave a deep chuckle.
“Thank fuck,” he sighed and felt the lion began to come closer to him and began to nuzzle the top of his head. He knew exactly what was happening, “Going through one of those moods again?”
“Yeah, sorry bout this” he murmured.
“Eh, it’s fine. Just do what you want,” he flippantly said and felt a purr of appreciation as he felt his fur getting licked.
And if the nuzzles didn’t catch Wukong’s attention then the lion demon currently licking his longtime crush did as he had to hold back a screech of displeasure at the sight, but that didn’t stop his whole body from twitching.
“Yeah, Ahmed does that sometimes,” Min smirked as they watched the brown monkey's eyes twitch. “Apparently lions do this for some social bonding and whatnot, but he especially likes to do this with Mac.”
“Oh does he,” Wukong let a small hiss out.
“Mmmhmm, sometimes hours would go by and he would still be at it,” Daiyu added and watched as his fingers dug into the cushion. Ohohoho she knows that look, it is the same look her sister gave to another male when he was trying to court the same chick as her, needless to say he can never land the same again, especially since he’s missing a foot and all.
“Hours then they're rather…close then,” he had to put on a wide grin, but he couldn’t help but bare a few teeth.
“Oh yeah, we might have known Doc and Med first before they met each other, but when the two met, it was like a perfect match.” Bohai drew out. He knows exactly what his friends were trying to do and he finds no shame in joining in. Even without the stories of the two monkeys' relations, it was too easy to see the fondness that was coming off from the both of them.
“Like a puzzle piece fit together,” Sheng emphasized. They know that the Monkey Pleb had quite the temper on him, not even counting his impulsiveness, and they couldn’t help but taunt the ever-loving fuck out of him. Life threatening, perhaps with all the killing he does, but fun, it is starting to look so much fun. Besides they already had their fun teasing Mac about this, now it’s the dumbass monkey's turn for his time in the spotlight.
He said nothing as he watched the two demons curl closer together.
‘A perfect match? Fit together?! Like hell they are! I’ll show you-no calm down and breathe,’ he took a deep breath and relaxed. ‘It’s okay. Moonshine trusts him and is okay with the…grooming the lion is doing. They have known each other for quite some time, so of course he wouldn’t mind.’ He glanced back at the scene, watched Mac's content face and he further relaxed. ‘I’m really glad that he had people watching out for him and besides it’s not like there is any bigger reason behind this than bonding.’
Then Wukong’s eyes caught Ahmed and as the monkey was about to smile wider in his direction the lion gave a little smirk and nuzzled his face a little bit harder into the long black fur and let out a content purr. Ahmed may not have any romantic feelings towards the smaller demon, but that doesn’t mean that he will willingly let go of him that easily. Macaque is a part of his pack and he is known for being…violently protective over each and every member of his small pack.
The Sage Monkey froze and barely stopped the growl coming out of his throat as he gritted his teeth while his eyes glinted a faint golden glow. ‘I’m gonna skin that overgrown cat!’
The rest of the demons subtly gave a thumbs up to the lion as they held back their laughter. Oh yes, they were all going to have so much fun with this.
A pack of fossa laid still in the grass as they quietly stalked their prey from behind. They followed the figure for some time waiting for the opportunity to strike as the prey continued a steady walk. The leader could almost feel the tender meat upon his teeth as he gazed upon their oversized prey. They have been only getting the small rabbits and birds and that wasn’t enough, it’s never enough to fill them so they're quite…hungry.
Then the prey stopped and so did they.
“I know you're there,” they all stilled as a soft voice called out. “I know you’ve been following me for quite some time.”
They all glanced towards the leader for guidance on their next approach, so he hunched down low and began to crawl closer in preparation to pounce on him.
“Ah ah ah,” the voice tutted, “I wouldn’t do that if I were you. Though I am talking to mindless beasts, so perhaps I should speak in their language.”
Before any even had the chance to feel offended by the words, they all smell a strange odor before-
EYES. THEY WATCH WATCH WATCH WATCH ALL
SEE THEY SEE SEE SEE EVERY LITTLE
STEP
STEP
NO ESCAPE
STEP
STEP
CAN’T RUN
STEP
STEP
CAN'T HIDE
STEP
STEP
FIGHT NEED TO FIGHT FIGHT CANT FIGHT
WIDE WIDE WHY SO WIDE
TEETH TEETH SO MANY TEETH WHY WHY WHYWHYWHYWHYWH
They’re brought back to the field, their back with their bodies, back with their heads with no teeth about to snap it right off-
“I’m in a good mood, so I’ll let you off easy okay,” they all flinched at the soft voice. “Well, what are you waiting for? Run.”
And they did, they ran and ran and ran so far that not even the growl in their stomach bothered them. They just needed to run away fast, it was no wonder they didn’t spot any other prey on the way here, they all must have sensed the predator. The terrifying predator with the teeth, why teeth, why so many teeth.
And they kept running.
“Well that’s enough excitement for one night,” the voice sighed as he continued back on his path and threw out in the distance the illuminating sight of a city. “I am almost there, I’ll see you soon my love.”
While there was a moon high in the sky there was still vast darkness upon the path as not a single critter chirped nor a single rustle of leaves as he walked upon the path. The animals all cowered away from the frightening presence and hoped that the predator wouldn’t look at them. But there were a few that were brave enough to slightly peek out from under their leaf or quietly look a smidge over their hole and get a glance at the predator retreating figure. All that they could see as it got farther and farther away was a black and white striped tail swishing softly behind him.

Requested by anonymous: 'Hello my love! I hope it’s alright to request. Lately I’ve been an even bigger sucker for Bonnie Gold. Could you maybe do something where the reader is a Shelby, and Bonnie falls for them but has no clue that their brothers are the Peaky and practically his boss. Just something fluffy and fun! Please'
Characters: Bonnie Gold x Shelby!Reader
Meanings: (Y/N)=Your name
Warnings: Swearing, lots of fluff
(A/N: It's long, I got carried away)
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
The wind whipped through my hair and hit my face as I rode my horse, her long legs galloping across the open field. This was my one piece of freedom, the time where it didn’t matter who I was or where I was going. It was just me and my horse, both experiencing the thrill of an adrenaline rush. Slowing down, I let her walk so she wasn’t exhausted, patting her neck graciously.
“Good girl,” I said,“you always know how to make me feel better.”
She reared her head back, shaking it and causing her hair to mess up. I quietly giggled as I brushed it out, continuing to ride her. We had gone a little further than usual today, and if any of my family found out how far away I was, they would not be happy. But I didn’t care. It was my day off, and I needed to be away from the hustle and bustle of Small Heath; as well as experience the tiniest amount of fresh air before heading back to the polluted city. After a few more minutes, I stopped my horse, dismounting her and grabbing her reigns. Her nose nudged me as I rummaged in my bag, knowing that her treats were in there.
“Don’t say I don’t look after you.” I mumbled to her as I produced a couple of sugar cubes.
The tender moment was interrupted when I heard hooves hitting against the ground, fast at first until I saw a man also riding a horse, slowing down as he approached me. My hand reached into my bag again, fingers resting on my gun. I had loaded it this morning, I knew I could whip it out at a moments notice.
“If I didn’t know any better, I would say that’s a very spoilt horse.” he said as he stopped in front of me.
“A girls got to look after her horse, hasn’t she?” I warily said.
“I don’t mean to scare you, but it’s not safe out here.”
“So why are you here?”
He chuckled, glancing away from me for a moment.“I must say, I’ve never seen such a beauty around these parts.”
I smirked.“You talking to me or the horse?”
He smiled again, and I found myself enjoying the view.“I’m Bonnie.”
“(Y/N).”
“It’s a pleasure to meet you (Y/N).”
“Do you own the land?”
“No, but I live on it.”
It clicked in my mind that he was a gypsy, not that I looked down on him now. My family had told me time and time again that we were descended from gypsies, and that we should never forget our roots.
“You’re right, I’ve never been here before.” I said as I mounted my horse.
“Well, would you like a tour?”
“A tour of a few fields and some trees?”
“That’s what all the city girls say.”
“Oh, so you’ve had a few ‘city girls’ turn up around here?”
Bonnie seemed flustered for a moment, but as I broke out laughing so did he, relief washing over his face. Commanding my horse forward, I was now next to him, having a chance to study his handsome features up close.
“Well, what are we waiting for?”
As expected, Bonnie knew his way around these great outdoors like the back of his hand. He would tell me the names of all the flowers and what they meant, explaining who created the pathways throughout the woods and how his ancestors used every plant and animal to survive. He was so passionate when speaking, and although there was definitely flirting throughout (from both of us), it wasn’t arrogant or cocky. I wasn’t just going to fall for this boy who I met in a field, but he was much more interesting than any lad who had come up to me on a night out. When we returned to the open field, I challenged him to a race, our laughs echoing out, before I triumphantly beat him.
“Please do not say you let me win, because boys have said that to me before.” I breathed out as he caught up to me.
“Oh, so you’ve been hanging around with country boys?”
I rolled my eyes at him, looking over my shoulder to see that the sun was getting low in the sky.“I’ve had a lovely time, but I have to get back home Bonnie.”
“Let me ride with you to the road.”
“Don’t you also need to get back to your family?”
“We’re gypsies, we’re free to roam where we want, when we want.”
As he said, we rode together to the back road, where hardly anyone drove, but it led back to Small Heath. I wasn’t sure if I would see Bonnie again, but unlike other boys that swaggered around or acted as if they were better than anyone else, essentially putting me off them, Bonnie held this charm, there was something about him that intrigued me. And the mystery of ever seeing each other again made me excited.
“This is where we part ways.” I stated.
“Will you be back? Maybe we could ride together sometime.”
I pretended to think about it, already trotting away from him.“It is a nice area. Perhaps you will see me around these parts.”
He scoffed a laugh.“You won’t even tell me when?”
I called out over my shoulder.“I guess you’ll just have to keep an eye out for me!”
No one had questioned where I had been that day, they knew I had been riding, and there seemed to be a lot of tension as I stepped into the room. Obviously something had happened (which they wouldn’t tell me, not yet anyway), but after my afternoon with Bonnie, I really didn’t care. My family was too caught up in whatever problem Tommy had got us into to ask why I was constantly smiling and day dreaming.
The next day I had been stuck in the shop, repeatedly huffing and making snarky comments at the incompetent men I was stuck working with. However, I knew I was just annoyed that I was working on such a beautiful day. It would have been perfect to go riding, a perfect day to see a certain gypsy boy. When Bonnie and I had gone our separate ways, I hadn’t thought too much about him until I went to bed. He had been on my mind, that bright, wide smile, intriguing eyes and the sound of his voice...that’s when I knew I was already in too deep. When I woke still thinking about him, I wanted to scold myself for being infatuated with a boy I just met, but I couldn’t, and the urge to find out more about him took over.
Watching as my brothers walked out of the shop, not telling me where they were going as usual, I took it as an opportunity to sneak away without any of them asking where I was going on my break. I wouldn’t have time to go all the way out to the field again, but being outside was better than being knocked into again and again by the amount of people in the shop.
“Where do you think you’re going?” Polly said, catching me before I could step out of the door.
I refrained from sighing.“Just taking my break.”
“It’s the busiest time of day, and you’re going to leave now?”
“Just ten minutes, please Pol? I can’t stand all the noise a moment longer.”
She was the one who sighed.“Fine. But do not be late coming back!”
As soon as she finished her sentence, I was out of there. My pace was quick, not headed to anywhere in particular, just somewhere less crowded. Slowing down, I pondered buying something to eat, buy a treat, I deserved it having to deal with those men. However, I was distracted when someone laid their hand on my shoulder, and being by myself, I went into defence mode; grabbing their arm, I twisted it as I spun around, instantly gasping when I saw who it was.
“Bonnie?!” I let go of him as he winced.“I am so sorry, I just panicked.”
“It’s fine.” he groaned, cradling his hand.“I shouldn’t have been so sneaky.”
“What are you doing here?”
“My dad is dealing with some business. But I spotted you across the street and had to see you.”
“So you’re in my part of the woods now.”
“It seems so.”
“I would offer you a tour, but I’m on break from work.”
“That’s alright. It seems I might be spending a lot more time here.”
“How come?”
“Long story short, I’ve always wanted to be a boxer. Never had much luck seeing as I live on the road, but dad seems to have sealed a deal, and I’m starting my training soon.”
“Bonnie, that’s amazing!”
“Yeah...” his cheeks started to flush pink.“I haven’t secured a match yet but...but I would love it if you could come to my first one.”
I smiled, nodding slightly.“I would be honoured to watch you win.”
“In the mean time, perhaps you could show me around, go for some drinks-”
“Bonnie!” someone shouted, an older man waiting for him. It must have been his father.
“I’ve got to go, but I’ll definitely be seeing you soon.”
Only when he began walking away did I feel how fast my heartbeat was. I was so giddy, an urge to giggle almost every other minute. It was embarrassing.
A few days passed by, and it was agonisingly slow. I had kept an eye out for Bonnie, taking a different route to walk past where some lads were trained to fight, but I saw nothing. I even went out riding to the field again, though he wasn't there either. The horrible, twisting feeling in my stomach made me upset, made me angry, I almost felt humiliated that I got my hopes up over a boy I hardly knew. That all changed when I saw him again in the streets.
"Bonnie!" I smiled as I ran towards him.
He was grinning too, meeting me halfway."(Y/N), I've been looking for you everywhere!"
There was an awkward moment where neither of knew if we should hug, shake hands or just leave it. Bonnie hesitantly pulled me in, but as soon as his arms wrapped around me, it felt right.
"I was actually looking for you too." I admitted as we parted.
"We were probably going around in circles chasing one another."
"Yeah, we must have looked like lunatics."
"I'm sorry I didn't catch you. But, guess what?"
His excited expression made me giggle."What?"
"I have my first boxing match."
"That's great Bonnie! I expect an invite, a car better come pick me up, a glass of champagne at the door-"
"Woah, unfortunately I don't think I can arrange any of that, but I can get you front row seats."
"So now I'll get to watch you win up close."
"No pressure there then."
"I'm not worried. I'll even place a bet on you if they're doing them."
"Good to know I have someone have so much confidence in me. Don't worry, I'll give you a good show."
The night of the match finally arrived. I had used the rest of the week to plan my outfit (a great excuse to go shopping, with Ada giving me opinions on everything), decide what to do with my hair and makeup, as well as what the fuck I was going to say to Bonnie after the fight. Would he be too beaten up to go drinking with? Would he even be able to string a sentence together? It occurred to me that I hadn't even seen him fight, maybe I was about to see a whole different side to him.
"(Y/N), cancel what you're doing Saturday night." Tommy commanded as he waltzed into my room without knocking.
I scoffed as I stopped reading, the book falling into my lap."Why?"
"You're going to a boxing match."
"I was going anyway."
"What?"
"Yeah, Bonnie, the smaller lad who's fighting, he invited me."
"How the fuck do you know Bonnie Gold?"
"W-we met when I was out riding."
"And you didn't think to tell me this?"
"Why would I? Whenever I've mentioned any boy before, you lot threaten and scare them away. Also, he was just a gypsy boy I met."
"I'm in business with his father."
"Well, shit. Small world. But I'm still going, right? I've spent my money on a new dress, I can't let it go to waste-"
"Yes, you're still going. Does he know who you are?"
I shook my head.
Tommy looked up at the ceiling, sighing before he left."Fuck me."
For some reason, my heart sank at the thought of Tommy using Bonnie to his advantage. He wouldn't have arranged this fight over good will or the kindness of his heart, it was covering something up. However, I was still going, I was going for Bonnie.
Following behind the other Shelby women, I tossed my hair back as men gawked at us. We held the power too, and not just because of how gorgeous we all looked that night. We were headed towards our seats, but I was too impatient to wait for Bonnie. Splitting from the group, I glanced around the crowds, spotting where Bonnie could potentially be before the fight. Luckily I was right, waltzing in to see Tommy speaking to Bonnie, as well as his father stood there.
"You're not supposed to be back here (Y/N)." Tommy stated, somehow expecting me to turn around and leave.
"I've come to wish our fighter good luck." I smirked, locking eyes with Bonnie.
His eyes were wide, flickering between my brother and I.
"Fine, I suppose he was the one to invite you."
With that he left, Bonnie's father following, but not before looking me up and down; not in a way that creeper me out, he was sizing me up, seeing if the youngest Shelby was as strong as the others. Once they were gone, I approached Bonnie, who was only in a pair of shorts and a robe.
"You're a Shelby?" he breathed out.
"Yes."
"And you didn't think to mention it?"
"You never asked. And also, does it matter?"
"Yes! Your family are the Peaky Blinders!"
"I just never said anything cause....well if I'm honest, I was too distracted when talking to you to bring it up."
"Distracted by what?"
"Well...You Bonnie."
We shared a smile, and he took another step towards me."Thank you for coming. I was trying to look out for you."
"Wouldn't miss it for the world. Now, you need to concentrate on totally beating the other guy to a pulp."
"You have such a way with words. After I win, I'm taking you out for celebratory drinks."
"Sounds like a plan."
I boldly leaned up on my tiptoes, pecking him lightly on the lips. Opening my eyes, I saw him leaning in again, stopping when he realised I had pulled away.
"Now go out there and win Bonnie. I'll be watching and waiting."

Here Be That EniKao Fic I Told You All About
Please note that this is post "The Final" movie. This happened around 2 months after Kenshin and Enishi's fight. AND OH MY GOD, this is my first RK fic since what? 2017?! It has happened and I would like to thank Mackenyu for making this possible. LOL.
--------------
An Unexpected Invitation
Winter and spring had passed quietly without much excitement. Which was exactly what the occupants of the Kamiya Dojo, and indeed the residents of Tokyo, needed. After much turmoil from the previous year, the quiet restful months have allowed everyone to heal from their wounds.
Physical injuries were all but gone now. No one was wearing any bandages, no one was limping around, clutching a broken shoulder or needing a change of bloody bindings.
Megumi has finally been able to get a decent enough stock of bandages and ointment for the actual patients of the Ouguni Clinic. A feat she didn't think was possible especially since everyone seemed to have been incapacitated in the aftermath of Yukishiro's Jinchuu.
"You're all a troublesome bunch." She told them when she'd given everyone a clean bill of health. She haughtily tossed her hair, looking imperiously down at them. "Next time, you're replacing everything that you'll use up in the clinic."
"Just let Sano take you out for dinner as payment." Yahiko suggested. Boldy too, since he had never really tried teasing Megumi before.
Megumi didn't seem to mind as she actually winked at him before turning to give Sano a look. "Dinner, eh? Sagara Sanosuke can afford dinner?" If she had any eyebrows, it would have disappeared up into her bangs. But the curl of her lips was enough to let Sano know that she was merely teasing him.
"Jou-chan would lend me money, right Jou-chan?" He sidled up to her, elbowing her and making faces that Kaoru supposed was meant to make him look like an adorable puppy, but failing miserably with the still darkened bruises on his face. His spiked-up hair did nothing to help his cause.
"I will most certainly not!" Kaoru indignantly crossed her arms, sending both Sano and Megumi a glare.
"I'd rather that Kenshin take me to dinner, ne Ken-san?" Cool hands snaked around his arms and Kenshin was quick to jump away from Megumi's clutches.
"Why you-"
"Maa, maa -" Kenshin said, raising his hands, trying to prevent unnecessary bloodshed.
As usual, they all ignored him; insults and intimidations of violence were quickly tossed around which ended when Kaoru actually promised Sanosuke that she will give him the money he needed just to shut Megumi up and make her stop acting so inappropriately towards Kenshin.
To which Megumi had answered with a laugh, sultry enough to make both Kaoru and Sano blush. Chaos ensued and Kenshin reveled in the happiness that stirred inside of him as he watched his friends chase each other, threatening murder and all sorts of physical pain.
It was good to be back.
-----------
All traces of the violence and destruction from last winter was gone. It was as if it that night of chaos and fire, explosions and screams piercing through the night, the ghostly air balloons silently stalking the sky had become more like a nightmare that had faded away.
It was now the height of summer, the humidity so unbearable that even when Kaoru had changed the schedule of her classes to the hour of the hare, ("too damn early, busu!" Yahiko had complained), by the mid-morning everyone was drenched with sweat, limp and tired.
Classes were dismissed by noon which gave her ample time to take a long, cooling bath and sit at the engawa eating watermelons while watching Kenshin do the laundry or the gardening or whatever household chore he fancied for the day.
Today however had been hotter than usual and Kaoru briefly wished that she was alone at the dojo so she could changed into something more lightweight, like a yukata.
A slightly opened yukata.
She missed those days when she could just lie down, arms and legs thrown around and not have a care in the world about propriety. It was a constant learning process and test of patience living with two grown men and a young boy on the verge of manhood.
She could not understand how her father had dealt with so many hotheaded, pigheaded, sweaty, untidy – well, except for Kenshin – scoundrels.
Ugh!
Sighing heavily, she closed her eyes, leaning her head against one of the columns of the engawa, her socked feet listlessly swinging at the edge. If only there was tiny little breeze to alleviate this heat. She wanted very much to loosen the summer kimono that she was wearing.
She'd been planning on going to The Akabeko later. It was the only reason why she had dressed up today. Tae-san had promised her that she'd prepare anmitsu and Kaoru could already taste the sweet red bean paste inside her mouth, but as the day progressed it had become too hot that she could barely move from her spot.
Even Kenshin had decided not to do any outdoor activity, quietly sitting beside her instead. Apparently feeling the same kind of stupor that had descended upon them.
It was the kind of heat that robbed you of thought and speech and Kaoru had been imagining dipping into a tub filled with ice cold water when the sound of bells and sirens blasted through the tepid air.
Another fire.
There have been small conflagrations around the city, what with the heat and people being addled by it, someone was always bound to fall asleep with a lit cigarette or mothers too distracted by the heatwave would leave matches lying around for bored children to play with. Easily put out without much fuss but when she'd look up, startled by the sound, she could see dark plumes in the sky, getting bigger by the second.
"It looks like that's from the docks." Kaoru murmured, sitting up straight.
"That it does, Kaoru-dono." There's an almost sleepy quality in Kenshin's voice, low and raw from not having spoken for a quite a while, but she sensed his alertness as he stood up, grimly looking at the cloud of smoke that had impossibly become larger at such a short amount of time. Before Kaoru could say anything, Kenshin had stepped off the engawa, already sliding his zori on.
"Kenshin-" she had started to stand up as well, but Kenshin had placed a gentle hand on her shoulder, stilling her.
"Please stay here, Kaoru-dono. It is too hot, that it is. Yahiko and I will go check if we could be of any help." His eyes are narrowed, an unpleasant thought obviously occurring to him but Kaoru didn't think that a fire, a safe distance from their home, should be of any concern.
"Don't over exert yourself Kenshin." She told him, the warning tone in her voice softened his eyes, the corners crinkling as he very visibly tried not to smile.
"I mean it, Kenshin." She added a little more firmly, fighting the urge to grab on to the ends of Kenshin's hair and pull on it just to show him how serious she was. "Absolutely no running inside burning buildings. None of that foolishness. I forbid it, Kenshin."
Kenshin's eyes gleamed at her. "Aa, Kaoru-dono, this one promise to stay behind the police line, that I do."
A blatant lie. The insufferable jerk. But Kaoru was too tired to argue and she only gave him her mightiest glare, one that was enough to make Sano squirm.
It apparently does not work on Kenshin as he merely reached out to briefly pat the top of her hand, his fingers lingering for just a few second more and Kaoru suddenly felt all hot inside. Like she had swallowed a whole taiyaki fresh from the oven and now it was idly swimming inside her stomach. She felt her whole face heating up and was rewarded with a genuinely amused smile from Kenshin who had leaned forward, just a fraction of an inch, head bowed down that she couldn't even see his eyes.
She felt herself freeze, her heart stuttering inside her chest. Kenshin seemed to have sensed this as he slowly, almost languidly, pulled back, the same amused smile still on his face before murmuring a quick goodbye.
She reluctantly let him go, trying not to worry so much as she watched as Kenshin waiting for Yahiko by the gate, ready to provide some much-needed assistance to the Tokyo Police.
Once they have closed the gate behind them, Kaoru sent a quick prayer to Kami-sama that no one was hurt from the fire and that her boys would come back unharmed.
She let her lids drop, trying to recapture that emotion she had felt when Kenshin had nearly invaded her private space. He'd never done that before…she wondered if it was brought upon the heatwave or something that he had seen in her face – when she had been imagining tugging at his hair…
Kaoru took a deep breath her eyes suddenly snapping open as she realized that she was finally alone. She let out a lazy smile as she pulled on the collar of her kimono, loosening it a bit. She let herself lay down, sprawled on the engawa, enjoying the little comfort it gave her.
--------
A shadow loomed over her.
It took her a second to realize that she had fallen asleep and the presence of someone looking down made her sit up, grabbing the nearest object she could reach to use as weapon: it was an emptied tea cup, utterly useless but she threw it with all of her might, hoping that in her still half-asleep state, her aim would be good enough.
It wasn't.
A hand caught it with ease and then a glint of light caught her eyes as she stared up into the face of Yukishiro Enishi, casually staring down at her as he pushed the bridge of his eyeglasses up to his nose, his other hand crushing the tea cup in his fist.
Kaoru let out a small gasp, realizing that that was her favorite and most expensive cup. Kenshin always took great care when handling it and now it has been turned into dust.
The indignant scream of rage that had wanted to escape her throat was swallowed down as Enishi wordlessly tossed something at her feet, it made a soft sound as it hit the wooden floor. Scrambling to sit up she glared at the object only to find out that it was Tomoe-san's diary.
She frowned and then slowly turned to look up at Kenshin's possibly deranged brother-in-law, now apparently escaped from prison, fugitive brother-in-law.
This could not be happening to her.
"I'm dreaming." She muttered darkly, more to herself, ignoring the man standing before her. She reached out to touch the diary, but pulled her hand at the last minute, her fingers curling in mid air before digging into the plump flesh of her palms. "I just need to wake up and everything will be fine." She closed her eyes, wondering rather inanely, if closing one's eyes would work when trying to wake up, wasn't she supposed to be doing the opposite? But -
Enishi was not cooperating. "I've read it." He told her, breaking the silence and forcing her to once again open her eyes, back to the dream. He was looking at her as though they were having some conversation that she had missed entirely because, what?!
"What?" She asked, equal parts perplexed and irritated at her inability to wake herself up.
"Nee-san's diary. I read it like you told me to." Enishi's voice held the same quality as Kenshin's earlier. A low rumble that sounded too unused and raw. Like those were the first words he had uttered since the last time she had seen him at his ruined garden, clutching at his stomach, sobbing Tomoe's name. He looked strangely normal all things considered. He was wearing an unusually bright orange Chinese robe that made Kaoru squint.
Kami-sama. She brought her hand to the side of her head, pressing hard, feeling suddenly lightheaded.
And then completely out of nowhere, in an almost toneless, disinterested voice, Yukishiro Enishi asked her: "Are you married now?"
Again, "What?!"
Enishi frowned at her. "Am I not making myself clear, Kamiya-san?" Now he was impatient, the tone of his voice changing into something that sounded suspiciously patronizing.
Kaoru absolutely hated being treated like she was a child. "Shut-up." She hissed at him. "What are you doing here?"
Enishi made a displeased sound at the back of his throat, "Why is your kimono open, Kamiya-san?"
Why is my -?
Kaoru felt her left eye violently twitching before letting out a shrieked loud enough to disturb their neighbors, it was a wonder no one came rushing in to check if she was alright. Kaoru had the presence of mind to clutch at her kimono, closing the tiniest of gaps that Enishi deemed improper. The stupid jerk. He couldn't have seen anything.
She took a deep breath, both hands clenching into tight fists as she gathered all of the swearwords Sanosuke had taught her and was about to let Enishi have them when something inside her head clicked.
She blinked up at her former captor who looked almost friendly, if it weren't for the stoic expression on his face that might actually surpass the permanently emotionless face of Shinamori-san. "The fire, that was you?!"
Enishi merely shrugged, untroubled by her accusation. "It was an old, hideous building. Abandoned." He added when Kaoru opened her mouth to protest, "I did Tokyo a favor."
A favor?! Kaoru wondered how exactly Enishi's head worked. How was deliberately burning a building –
"It was the green one with the stupid yellow door." He explained further, seeing the balled-up fists that Kaoru was shaking at him.
Kaoru saw the building inside her head and winced. It was incredibly ugly and she had complained about it to Tae-san about how much of an eye sore it was and she wished someone would just burn it to the ground but hadn't meant it literally!
She suddenly jumped up when she noticed Enishi stepping into the engawa.
Going into her Chūdan-no-kamae stance, her left foot just a few inches behind her right foot, her left heel elevated, hip thrust forward. Her shoulder was too tense though and she had to concentrate, trying to relax her shoulders.
She took deep breaths, readying herself for any attack. She didn't have her bokken with her, dammit, but she wasn't going to be taken without a fight. Not again. Never again. If she had to claw out Enishi's eyes or shove his glasses to his eyeballs, she'd do it.
"Stay back." Kaoru hissed at Enishi as he took another step towards her. "I will not let you take me again."
Enishi frowned at her. "Take you? Why would you think I'd want to take you?" He asked in a tone that suggested something entirely different to Kaoru, she just didn't know what, which further annoyed her. This was too weird to be a dream.
Yukishiro Enishi was really here. Again. In her dojo. And he made damn certain that no one was with her but he didn't want to take her.
Why couldn't Kenshin's brother-in-law be Yahiko's age?! She'd have a better way of dealing with that instead of this brown eyed, six feet, bulging muscles of insanity - Kaoru shook her head, clearing her thoughts. "What do you want then, you creep?"
Enishi merely raised his eyebrows, a dark severe line, in complete contrast to his disheveled white hair. "Is this how you normally react when asked if you're already married?"
Kaoru's jaw dropped. A hummingbird can probably fly inside and make a nest inside her mouth. She quickly clamped it shut before, letting out a battle cry: "You jerk! That's not of your business!" She lunged at Enishi, who smoothly slid out of her way and she tried another attack, swiping her feet from underneath him, which he also dodged by jumping away from her. He backed into the dojo and Kaoru followed, grabbing a bokken. Finally, a weapon she could use. She grinned in triumph and prepared to attack once again.
The bastard didn't even break a sweat as he effortless avoided her blows – and if he hadn't, she would've cracked his head. The whistling sound her bokken made every time she swung it towards Enishi filled the air.
Still, he sidestepped, graceful and damn it, oh so elegantly. It was almost as if he was dancing, his feet light and silent.
"Kuso, stay still!" Kaoru ordered, completely losing her patience, panting like a wild boar.
And the stupid fucking Yukishiro smirked at her.
Smirked! She was going to wipe that off of his beautiful face.
Wait.
WHAT?!
"I take it you aren't married yet." Enishi finally said, stepping into the line of her attack.
Gotcha!
But of course, like before, his hands clamped around her bokken, snatching it from her with restrained viciousness and throwing it somewhere against the wall where it noisily clattered.
Completely unperturbed by the events, Enishi then very casually asked her, "Do you want to go to Shanghai with me, Kamiya-san?"
And Kaoru thought, not for the first time in her life, that she was cursed to deal with incorrigible men that she would very much like to whack with her bokken.
Mou!

Author's Note:
And that is what I have so far. I don't know what to do with it. Anyway, tell me what you think. This fic is borne out of the sheer frustration of The Final and how Jinchuu Arc, which I am now calling the Cursed Arc for obvious reasons– had been - watered down seems too kind, ne?
But I'll rant some more if I can manage to have a second chapter up. Maybe.
Lastly, I typed this all up really fast while pretending to work so, if there are any typos, annoying grammatical errors, I promise I'll come back and try to fix them. I hope.

Typically served in a bowl, with toppings like slices of fruit and sweet red bean paste. The dessert is also served with a sweet black syrup, kuromitsu,(the -mitsu in anmitsu) that's poured over the treat just before you enjoy it.
